Love of outdoors, ability to mimic animal sounds lead to following for paraplegic man BY OLIVIA MCCLURE Contributing writer

Joshua Carney isn’t one to let anything get in the way of his goals. After his father accidentally shot him on a turkey hunt in 2005, Carney — who was 13 at the time — became paraplegic. But he was determined not to let a wheelchair stop him from getting back out in the woods. “I spent three, four months in the hospital,” Carney said. “Right after I got out of the hospital, I went right back hunting. I mean, that’s a passion for me. That’s what I love.”

Though she was still a strong player, her coach initially assigned her to a position she wasn’t happy with. Some of her teammates doubted she could make it back to the top, too. “Even if my statistics were improving,” Scott recalled, “my coach said, ‘Not yet. It’s not good enough yet to make a change.’ Sometimes you have to hold onto one word, something small.” For Scott, that something small was the word “yet.” Even when she sprained her ankle, she remained hopeful — and made it to the Olympics for a fifth time.

Lane Regional Medical Center, which recently laid off doctors, cut services and closed its labor and delivery unit Sunday, ending delivery services at the Zachary hospital. The hospital announced the closure Wednesday. Following the closure, Drs. Joshua Best, Samantha Bland and Nikki Gautreaux will leave Lane Regional’s labor and delivery unit and join the medical staff at Woman’s Hospital on Monday. Six full-time employees in the labor and delivery unit were laid off, said Jon Hirsch, a spokesman for Lane Regional. Four of the employees have already found other jobs, he said. About 350 babies are delivered annually in the Lane Regional labor and delivery unit, Hirsch said. “We recognize the importance of the Labor and Delivery unit to the families who have relied on Lane for generations,” CEO Frank Corcoran said. “At the same time, the volume of deliveries made it increasingly difficult for Lane to sustain the service independently. This transition gives women access to delivery services through Woman’s while preserving prenatal care in Zachary.” Lane Regional and Woman’s are also discussing an arrangement under which Woman’s would assume ownership and operation of the outpatient OB/GYN clinic. The clinic would remain at its current location on Lane’s campus and continue providing women’s health, prenatal and postpartum care. “Woman’s mission is to improve the health of women and infants,” said Rene Ragas, president and CEO of Woman’s Hospital. “Each year, we proudly care for hundreds of women and families from Zachary and neighboring communities. We are honored to expand our support for the physicians and staff who serve this community and, most importantly, to ensure patients continue to have access to care.” There had been rumors in recent weeks that Lane Regional would close the labor and delivery unit, which the hospital denied. The hospital has been under financial strains. Financial issues have plagued hospitals around the country, especially those serving rural communities — more than 100 rural hospitals have closed in the past decade, according to the Center for Healthcare Quality & Payment Reform. Since 2008, at least 12 Mississippi hospitals have closed, putting pressure on some Louisiana hospitals. In July, Lane said it was seeking

Carney is trying to raise $100,000 so he can receive a stem cell treatment that may help him regain use of his legs, which are paralyzed due to damage to his spinal cord. “It’s not receiving enough signals to get my legs to respond,” he said. The body uses stem cells to repair and recover, he explained. The hope is that injecting them into his spinal cord will mend a slit caused by the hunting accident and, eventually, allow him to walk. Carney has had stem cell treatment already. He said it helped him regain mobility in his arms after complications from a 2022 back surgery caused him to become quadriplegic. The treatment has a 40% to 60% chance of working, Carney said. He would like to schedule the procedure, which is offered by

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Former Olympian stresses developing a championship mindset in everyday life

BY OLIVIA MCCLURE Contributing writer

Danielle Scott knows exactly how many volleyball games she has lost: 1,417. In her long career, which included five Olympics appearances, Scott had plenty of wins, too. But it was the losses that brought self reflection and valuable lessons that helped her develop what she calls a “champion mindset.” “The champion mindset isn’t always about being the best person in the room,” she said. “It’s about being willing to become better than you were yesterday.” Scott recounted her story Friday during Mayor David McDavid’s annual prayer luncheon at First Baptist Church in Zachary. A Baton Rouge native, Scott now lives in Houston and works in talent acquisition for League One Volleyball. Scott told the audience about the motto that guides her: believe, do, become. She didn’t always believe in herself. When she was young, she was painfully shy and awkward. But she wanted to get involved in sports, and a coach along with her parents supported her. “Never underestimate what you and your belief in them might give,” she said. “You may see something in them that they cannot see in themselves yet.” She eventually became a multisport athlete at Woodlawn High School. People began to ask her if

Tess Ricketts performs worship music, including ‘Goodness of God.’ she was heading for the Olympics — and that inspired her. “Someone had seen the possibilities of what I could do before I could see it in myself,” she said. “And suddenly … I began to believe that maybe, just me, I could become that Olympian.” With a lot of hard work, Scott earned a volleyball scholarship to Long Beach State University and made her first Olympics appearance in 1996 in Atlanta. She returned to the games in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Then, ahead of the 2012 Olympics, Scott faced new challenges. She had taken time off from training when she became a mother.

SPORTS

Familiar rivals clash in Central

On Oct. 9, the Zachary High School football team (3-2) made the short trip to Central to play the Wildcats (3-2) in the 4-5A district opener for both teams. Central High was fresh off a win (42-21) the previous week against last year’s Division I Non Select State Champion Ouachita at CenWarren tral while the Broncos were Brady on the road but picked an ZACHARY equally impressive win (56SPORTS 28) versus the District 5-5A St. Amant Gators. The Central rivalry is more than the fact that they are close as both schools have independent school districts (Zachary was first), most of the players in this game have played against each other from as young as 6 or 7 years old in youth football, middle school, freshmen and junior varsity football. The Wildcats and the Broncos have played 60 times in the last 70 years with the Broncos winning seven of the last 10 games. They became even bigger rivals when the Broncos moved up in classification and ended up in the same 5A district. To add to the drama, last year, Central pulled out a victory over the Broncos (3335) at Zachary during the regular season. They met again in the quarterfinals at Central where the Broncos returned the favor with a 31-27 victory in the closing seconds. The Broncos started the game with a six-play drive that ended with a Wildcats interception. The Broncos defense held; on the ensuing possession, the Broncos drove to the Central 30 yard-line before turning the ball over again with a fumble. Again the Broncos defense held, and a fumble by the Wildcats punter on fourth down gave the Broncos a first down at the Central 20. Another Broncos turnover (interception) gave the Wildcats the ball back. Two teams averaging over 40 points a game were scoreless after one quarter. The Broncos defense rose to the occasion and held again and a tipped field goal attempt gave the Broncos the ball back. A 10-play Broncos drive with a healthy dose

tighten the score to 17-14 with 9:36 remaining. Patton responded with a huge run to give the Broncos a first down at the Central 30-yard line. Patton scored from 40 yards two plays later to extend the Broncos lead to 24-14 as the offensive line exerted themselves over the Wildcats and Patton ran wild. The Broncos defense again responded with a three and out that forced the Wildcats to punt. The Broncos offense turned to Ethan Kimmie as Platt’s pass from 45 yards put the Broncos up 31-14 with 6:50 to play. On the ensuing Wildcats possession an interception by Darius Lee gave the Broncos the ball back. With 4:02 left in the game, Central ran into the punter on fourth down and the Broncos went back to the ground with Patton to consume time. After a Broncos punt with 1:43 left in the game the Wildcats offense found the end zone to tighten the game 31-21 with 34 seconds remaining. The Broncos special teams recovered the on-side kick, and the Broncos closed things out with a 31-21 win. The Broncos defense on the night ... incredible. The Broncos will be home next against Catholic.

The Broncos defense held and the two powerhouse offenses put together three total first-half points. Defense was the name of the game. The Wildcats started on offense at the beginning of the second half and scored on the initial possession to take the lead 7-3. A Jacori Platt pass to Trikoby Rheames three play later put the Broncos back on top 10-7 as the offenses found their footing. Central fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Broncos were primed for a big play starting back on offense at the Central 37-yard line. On a fourth and five from the Central 32 the Broncos got a first down on a Platt to Ethan Kimmie throw to keep

the drive alive. The Broncos continued to lean on the offensive line and Patten as a time and yard consuming drive ended with a touchdown as the Broncos extended the lead to 17-7 with 4:45 left in the third quarter. The Broncos defense again responded and the Broncos Kilan Jones return gave the Broncos another offensive possession starting in Wildcat territory at the 39-yard line. The Broncos offensive line and Patton continued to lean on the Wildcats as the Broncos closed out the third quarter deep in Wildcats territory but fell short on a fourth down run by Patton. The Wildcats started the fourth with an explosive play that ended deep in Bronco’s territory and scored three plays later to

Other news and notes The ZHS and Northwestern Middle School swim teams honored former teammate Tristan Vessel on what would have been his 22nd birthday on Sept. 28 by completing his favorite set — endless 50s. Vessel died in a car crash 2022. At the time of his death, Vessel was one of top swimmers in the area and state and is now the namesake for the Tristan Vessel Invitational, which is held annually in his honor. The ZHS volleyball team (10-8) keeps moving up after losing to St. Joseph Academy on Oct. 5, the Broncos picked up a four-set win over district foe Denham Springs (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18) on Oct. 7th to rise to 30th in the Division 1 power rankings. Scott said all of her experiences have helped her become much more than just an athlete. She is a mother and world traveler, too, for example — and she has learned to apply the “champion mindset” that she honed as an Olympian to all aspects of her life. She remembered hearing chants of “USA” at the opening ceremonies she at-

tended as an Olympian and realizing that she was part of something bigger than herself. When setting goals, it’s important to think about what you can achieve not just for yourself but also for others — a lesson Scott said was relevant for the many elected and other community leaders who were in the audience. “Whether you’re a coach, a teacher, a parent, a leader, a friend, the belief can help open the door,” she said. “And when someone chooses to do the work, that is when they have to choose to walk through. And when they continue to learn, grow and serve others, they become someone who can open doors for the next generation. So

that’s what this community is all about. That’s how we build stronger teams. That’s how we build stronger families, and that’s how we build stronger communities.” As is tradition, the event involved several local students. Zachary High School Junior ROTC members presented the colors and students from the school performed music. Additionally, student Amelia Mitchen led the Pledge of Allegiance while Karsyn Marshall introduced Scott. Also recognized at the event was Dakota Ward, an eighth grader in Michelle Kohler’s art class at Northwestern Middle School. Ward’s illustration was featured on the event program.

In August, Lane Regional laid off 14 employees, including doctors, medical staff and administration and said it would discontinue its allergy, asthma and immunology services due to low patient volume. The hospital attributed the cuts to high operating costs, declining reimbursement rates and rising labor costs. Hirsch said Lane remains in discussions with other health care organizations about potential strategic affiliations involving other areas of the hospital’s operations.

More than 850 people work at Lane Regional, making it the largest employer in Zachary. In August 2025 the hospital expanded to serve more patients with a $90 million patient tower with 48 rooms. That bumped Lane up to 187 beds. The expansion also brought along new services like critical care and neurology to an area that local officials say is medically vulnerable. Jon Hirsch said the the Lane OB/GYN Clinic remains open and continues to see obstetric and gynecology patients. All providers continue to see patients at the clinic, located in the Lane Diagnostic Center at 6550 Main Street, Suite 2000, in Zachary. Continued from page 1G a doctor in Tennessee, for spring 2027 — perhaps on or around April 17, which will mark the 22nd anniversary of when he was shot. In those 22 years, Carney has become something of a celebrity in the outdoors world, where he’s known as Son of the South. He got his start as a 14-year-old on “Paradise Louisiana,” a locally produced hunting and fishing TV program. Then, a few years later, he discovered a special talent that resulted from damage to his esophagus. “It altered my vocal cords, which allows me to mimic animal sounds, which is how I grew in the outdoor industry,” he said. That was when things really took off. Videos circulated online of Carney’s ability to call

turkeys and just about any other animal. He got invitations to give motivational speeches, appear on hunting shows and lead seminars. He estimates he has done 600 to 700 podcasts. All those commitments kept Carney on the road for several years. While he had to scale back after his 2022 surgery, he continues to share his passion for the outdoors alongside a message of overcoming obstacles and having faith. “I’m supposed to be the underdog in a lot of situations, but I don’t let that get to me if I want to do something,” Carney said. “I just put my mind to it and go do it. You can overcome anything that gets thrown at you, no matter if it’s physical, mental, financial. If you want to do it, you can do it.” To learn more or to make a donation, visit www.givesendgo.com/joshua carney.

Strangers quickly become fellow pilgrims, and people from many different backgrounds come together with a shared purpose, he said.

One of the most recognizable symbols along the Camino is the scallop shell. According to tradition, after the death of St. James, his body was transported by boat to the Iberian Peninsula, and when the vessel reached shore, it was covered in scallop shells. The shell eventually became a symbol of the pilgrimage. Its grooves, all meeting at a single point, are often interpreted as representing the many routes pilgrims take across Europe before converging at Santiago. People walk the Camino for many reasons, including faith, challenge, discovery, reflection
