Is it time to trim those nails? How to handle your pet’s nail care routine Traci Howerton ANIMAL RESCUE
If you hear a dog’s nails before it enters the room, it may be time for a little paw maintenance. That familiar click, click, click across a hard floor is more than just a grooming issue. Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and even affect how a dog stands and walks, making regular trims an important part of the dog’s overall health. I’ve been grooming my own dogs for several years now. I’ve gotten pretty comfortable with the entire process, but there’s one job I still happily leave

to the professionals: nail trimming. I know I’m not alone. For many pet owners, clipping nails is one of the most intimidating parts of grooming. Pets don’t always cooperate; it’s hard to see where to cut on dark nails, and one accidental encounter with the quick — the sensitive part inside the nail that contains blood vessels and nerves — can cause bleeding and leave a pet unwilling to try again. Whether you take the DIY route or enlist a groomer or veterinarian, you
can’t ignore nail care. When a dog’s nails become too long, they can touch the ground and alter how the paw sits when standing and walking. Over time, that can cause discomfort and affect a dog’s gait. Long nails are also more likely to snag, split, or break. Don’t forget the dewclaws either. These nails usually don’t touch the ground, so they don’t wear down naturally and can become overgrown or even curl toward the skin if you don’t
check and trim them regularly. No single schedule works for every pet. A dog that regularly walks on sidewalks or other hard surfaces may naturally wear down its nails more than a dog that spends most of its time indoors or walking on grass. Age and activity level matter, too. Senior dogs and less active pets may need more frequent attention because their nails aren’t worn down as much by everyday activity.

Check a cat’s nails every few weeks, especially in senior cats. Scratching posts provide an important outlet for natural scratching behavior, but they don’t necessarily eliminate the need for trimming. Older cats may also be less diligent about maintaining their claws, which can lead to thick or overgrown nails. If you’re comfortable trimming nails at home, a little preparation can make the process easier. Start by getting the pet accustomed to having its paws handled when the clippers aren’t around. Touch the paws, gently press individual toes and reward calm behavior. Gradually introducing clippers or a nail grinder can also help make the equipment less intimidating. When it’s time to trim, remove small amounts rather than making one large cut. The quick contains blood vessels and nerves and will bleed and hurt if you cut it. Lightcolored nails are easier to see, but dark nails require more caution. Keep styptic powder nearby in case you accidentally cut too far. There’s no rule that all the nails have to be done at once. If a pet becomes anxious after two or three
nails, stop. Finishing another paw tomorrow is better than turning nail trimming into a wrestling match that increases the risk of injury. Treats can also go a long way toward making paw handling and nail trims a positive experience. If a pet becomes extremely fearful, growls, struggles, or tries to bite, don’t force the issue. A groomer or veterinarian can help, and some pets may need additional strategies to safely reduce fear and anxiety surrounding nail care. Regularly checking the paws also gives you a chance to look for cracked nails, irritated paw pads, lumps, swelling, or anything stuck between the toes. Keeping those nails at a healthy length is about much more than making the paws look tidy. It helps pets move comfortably and can prevent painful nail problems before they start.

Jefferson Parish library shares Black ancestry research Lisa Moore, head of research services and cataloger at the Amistad Research Center in New Orleans, will present “Researching Black Ancestry at the Amistad” at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. The event is part of the Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans’ regularly scheduled meeting. Moore will discuss resources from the Amistad’s Chris collections that can support Smith genealogical research. She LIBRARY will highlight collections LAGNIAPPE of particular interest to genealogists and offer advice for when patrons hit the “1860 wall” while searching for Black ancestors. Librarian Gwen Kelley also continues her series of genealogical research lectures at River Ridge Library, 8825 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge, at 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, with information about genealogical research online.
Library Hosts Three Authors — Armand, Hebert and Smith Three local authors will discuss and sign copies of their new books, all published by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Press, at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. The event is free and open to the public.
‘The Roads We Travel’ by David Armand “The Roads We Travel” is a memoir written in the style of Anne Lamott’s “Bird by Bird,” Stephen King’s “On Writing,” and Ellen Gilchrist’s “The Writing Life.” Rather than approaching the pedagogy of creative writing in the traditional academic, prescriptive manner, Armand uses his own journey toward becoming a successful writer and teacher to pass on what he’s learned over the years about what makes good writing work (as well as what makes some writing unsuccessful).
‘Hear This! A Twisted Tale of Sonic Torment’ by Jon Hébert New Orleans rocker Jon Hébert cranked his amp to 10 every night for years. Suddenly, a rare hearingsensitivity disorder turns his amplifier’s lowest setting into a source of agony, sending him spiraling into chronic pain, isolation and a crisis of identity that costs him the thing he loves most: music. Part dark comedy, part medical mystery, part psychological thriller, “Hear This!” chronicles one musician’s bizarre quest for relief — and his attempt to find healing, humor, and hope in a world gone completely off-key.
‘Skylark’ by William Christy Smith Beston Barnett, a newly minted creative writing graduate, cannot find a job in his field. He takes a volunteer position leading a writer’s group of HIV-positive men who meet each Wednesday night at Skylark, a restaurant in New Orleans’ Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. His students have a lot of fun but don’t produce much. Beston decides to document their lives and deaths, adventures and misadventures, loves and battles. “Skylark” was shortlisted for the 2020 Faulkner Wisdom Literary Contest in the novel category. It was a runner-up for the 2021 Flannery
O’Connor Award for Short Fiction and a finalist for the C. Michael Curtis Short Story Book Prize from Hub City Press.
Storyville lecture Local historian Derby Gisclair will present “Beyond Storyville” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. This event is free and open to the public. The talk will explore the 19th-century underworld, starting with The Swamp, then the two-block walk through Hell along Gallatin Street, and then Basin Street. It will end with the boiling point that led to the creation of Storyville. The talk will include many stories and color about the gangs and madams who operated there, including Kate Townsend, Willie V. Piazza and Hilma Burt.
The rain catches the light as Peabody performs on the Riverfront Stage during Gretna Fest in Gretna on Oct. 3.
Dolly documentaries Two short documentaries about the impact of Dolly Parton will be shown at 6 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. ‘“The Library That Dolly Built: Celebrating the People Who Made Dolly’s Dream Come True” — (108 minutes) A feature-length documentary that explores the history, impact and future of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a global book-gifting program, with guest narrator, actress and author Danica McKellar and music by Dolly Parton. “What Dolly Gave Me” — (23 minutes) The film features Sevier County Mayor Emeritus Larry Waters, who knew Parton growing up; Rachel Milford of Knoxville’s Cattywampus Puppet Council; Ally Slavick of Random Acts of Flowers; and local artists, musicians, business owners and residents. Their recollections trace Parton’s influence through the books her Imagination Library delivered to children, the uniforms she purchased for her local high school band and the pride she inspired in fellow Appalachians.
Halloween programs Go to the library’s website to find dozens of events for children, teens and adults at 17 locations. Highlights:
Haunted plantations David Laville, co-founder and lead investigator of the New Orleans Ghost Hunters, will discuss his new book, “The Haunted Plantations of Louisiana,” at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave. in Metairie. Laville will discuss landmark properties known for paranormal activity, including The Myrtles, Oak Alley Plantation, Destrehan Plantation, Nottoway Plantation, The Pitot House and many others.
