The money is primarily used to cover the costs of the hospital’s 24-hour, seven day-a-week EMS/ambulance service. There are three full-time ambulances, an air evacuation team and community paramedicine program, which allows for fast response times across the parish. West Feliciana Hospital owns and manages its own EMS/ambulance service, providing direct oversight and care coordination of emergency medical transportation and advanced life support. Many hospitals in the state depend on external parish or contracted EMS/ambulance services that often originate outside of local areas; whereas West Feliciana Hospital’s EMS team is fully integrated with hospital operations and strategically located throughout the parish, the release said. “Our in-house EMS/ambulance service is a life-saving investment for our residents. Most rural areas are reliant upon services coming in from the larger nearby cities, which can delay response times, especially when there are multiple calls. level,” Chastant said. Those local services include an urgent care facility that opened in February. It provides patient service 7 days a week, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The hospital’s emergency room is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, and two walk-in clinics — St. Francis Cypress Rural Health Clinic and St. Francis Pediatric Rural Health Clinic — are open weekdays, Monday-Friday. Onsite services include imaging; inpatient care; physical, occupational and speech therapy; pain management care; gastroenterology; intensive outpatient mental health care; lab work; respiratory services; sleep studies; and wellness outreach. “By bringing specialty services to our campus, we are making quality health care more accessible and more affordable. Our residents no longer have to drive an hour just to get important tests or imaging or to see a specialist. We provide those services here, close to home,” Chastant said. He said the hospital’s EMS serves more than 10,000 residents, responding to nearly 2,000 callouts per year. At the same time, more than 300 patients visit the urgent care facility each month. Patients are typically diagnosed onsite and prescribed medications that can be filled by the hospital or local pharmacists. The facility includes an on-site pediatrician. Chastant said the hospital’s improved services have expanded its patient base and made it a preferred choice among a growing number of West Feliciana Parish residents.

Continued from page 1G homestead-exemption is applied when applicable. For example, a home valued at $250,000 would pay $87.50 after the $75,000 homestead exemption is applied. Having our units here — and having three of them in service, as well as an air evac(uation) — allows us to get to our residents when they

Services are provided at home, through telehealth, and through coordinated patient transportation.

“This one-of-a-kind program is reducing readmissions for patients and improving healthcare overall for so many who have difficulty traveling from their remote locations,” Chastant said. He said the local funding allows the hospital to invest in new local services that would otherwise be eliminated due to recent federal cuts in rural healthcare. He noted

Billy Nungesser and Keep Louisiana Beautiful awarded more than $500,000 in grant funding to communities and organizations across Louisiana to help prevent litter, reduce waste, improve recycling, beautify public spaces and strengthen enforcement of the state’s litter and illegal dumping laws. The 2026-27 grants total $510,797 to local governments, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and other eligible organizations throughout the state. n Litter Enforcement Surveillance Camera Grants to support local efforts to identify and prosecute littering and illegal dumping. The grant programs were developed to address key findings from KLB’s 2023 Louisiana Litter Study, which found that maintained and beautified spaces have 87% less litter. deputy warden of the Angola prison. He ran unsuccessfully for DA in the two-parish district in 1998. District Judge Betsy Jones administered the oath of office to Dodd in a brief ceremony attended by the district’s other judge, Sydney Picou Walker, the two parishes’ clerks of court, employees of the district attorney’s office, sheriff’s deputies and other court officials. Noting the brevity of his term, Dodd said he does not expect to make significant changes in the operations of

the office. “I just want to keep the boat pointed in the way that Sam has had it going,” he said. He said nearly every attorney thinks of one day becoming a district attorney or a judge. For that reason, being DA, if only for three months, is “an honor to have,” he said. D’Aquilla will succeed Picou Walker, who was termlimited in the position. Feliciana voters will choose Nov. 3 between Cy D’Aquila and Ken Fabre for the district attorney’s position.
