The Krewe of Dolly danced through the French Quarter on ‘9 to 5 Day,’ celebrating Dolly Parton with a parade with big wigs and glitter. The parade started outside Armstrong Park and traveled through the French Quarter to the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Speakers spoke from the balcony of the Jazz Museum about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and Mayor Helen Moreno and the City Council gave proclamations announcing Sept. 25 as Dolly Day in New Orleans.
Run, walk and maybe even dress up the pups for a good cause If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend that also helps local animals, grab your walking shoes and maybe your dog’s favorite costume. The NOLA Dogs Race to the Rescue 5K Run/Walk returns Oct. 11 at historic Metairie Cemetery, bringing together runners, walkers, pet lovers, and local rescue organizations for a morning dedicated to helping animals in need. You don’t have to be a serious runner to join in. Now in its ninth year, Race to the Rescue has raised approximately $225,000 for local animal rescue organizations over the past eight years. Nearly 1,000 people of all ages typically participate, making it an event the whole family can enjoy. This year’s proceeds will Traci benefit six local organizaHowerton tions: Animal Rescue New ANIMAL Orleans, Take Paws Rescue, RESCUE The Inner Pup, Trampled Rose Rescue & Rehab, Trap Dat Cat, and Zeus’ Rescues. Anyone who has spent time around animal rescue knows how quickly the bills add up. Food, vaccinations, heartworm treatment, spay and neuter surgeries, emergency veterinary care, and the everyday costs of caring for animals while they wait for homes all require money. Events like this help provide it. The morning begins at 8 a.m. with what may be my favorite part: a dog parade. Pets and their people are invited to join a

FESTIVAL
Continued from page 1G 12th Street in Bridge City that eventually became Holy Guardian Angels Parish. In 1967, with dreams of expanding the growing parish, Monsignor Luminais rolled up his sleeves and worked with the community, starting small church fairs to raise money. They featured different themes over the years, including a Country and Western Fair and a Fiesta Fair, before Luminais settled on something close to his heart — gumbo. Luminais had a gift for getting people involved, and parishioners answered the call. Men and women volunteered their time and talents. Families worked booths, cooked food, handled electrical work, booked entertainment, organized pageants, maintained the festival grounds, and did whatever else needed to be done. The Gumbo Festival became a family tradition, and some families have now devoted four generations to the event. Elaine Boatwright, one of the festival’s co-founders, served as the organization’s secretary for 50 years. Her late husband, Jimmy, volunteered for more than 40 years and cooked red beans at the festival. Their children and grandchildren joined the tradition as well, with family members serving as Miss Creole Gumbo and King Creole Gumbo. Boatwright’s daughter, Sabrina Palmisano, summed up the connection simply: “It’s part of my life. I love my parish, my God and my church.” Because Holy Guardian Angels did not have a parish school to provide financial support, festival proceeds helped keep the parish afloat. Money raised helped purchase property, construct buildings, and eventually build the Holy Guardian Angels Church. Construction began in 1983, and the church was consecrated in March 1987. Even the church itself reflected the hands and hearts of its people. Parishioner Elson Griffin crafted the sanctuary, altar, lectern, ambo and wooden crosses from Louisiana pecky cypress. Parishioners helped select the statues that lined the walls. Other pieces were donated, designed, collected or created through relationships formed over decades. It represented years of festival booths, pots of gumbo, meetings, prayers, volunteer hours, sacrifices

‘It felt like a death’ The final Mass at Holy Guardian Angels was held on June 30, 2024, after the Archdiocese of New Orleans decided to close the church during a consolidation, and recently sold the property to nearby Avondale Global Gateway. “It felt like a death,” Angela Bye said. Bye said the people of Holy Guardian Angels had not simply attended the church; they had helped create its history and the surrounding community. Over the years, Bridge City had already lost several places that brought residents together, including the former Bridge City Elementary School, which was torn down, and the playground, which closed after storm damage. “All the things that connect our community were being taken away,” Bye said. For many, it marked the end of an era, but it did not erase nearly six decades of work, memories and tradition. “Where do we go from here?” asked Nikole Larousse Hebert, whose family became involved with the festival after she was crowned Miss Creole Gumbo in 1986. She said that when the possibility of the church closing became real, she never saw it as the end. Volunteers continued working, planning and praying. They remained committed to preserving the Miss Creole Gumbo tradition and the festival In Westwego, the Gumbo Festival found a new home.
Tradition continues The city of Westwego worked with the Gumbo Festival organization to make last year’s event happen. Now the city is welcoming it back for a sec-
ond year. For longtime volunteers, moving the festival does not mean forgetting Bridge City or Holy Guardian Angels. It means carrying them along, Melissa Dugas said. “The love of the parishioners is keeping the festival going,” Dugas said. “We are keeping the tradition going no matter where it’s held.” The festivities kick off Oct. 9 with NOLA Rouge taking the stage at 6:30 p.m., followed by Revamped Band at 8:30 p.m. On Oct. 10, Imagination Movers performs at 12:30 p.m., followed by Jak of Klubz at 2 p.m. Rhythm’s Dance Company takes the stage at 4:15 p.m., followed by Nashville South at 4:45 p.m. and Rock Show NOLA at 8 p.m. The entertainment continues Oct. 11 with T Marie and Bayou Juju at 11:30 a.m. Southern Charm Dance Team follows at 1:15 p.m., with Tracy Anne Jolie and The Beasts of Bourbon at 2 p.m. and Aaron Foret Band closing out the afternoon at 5 p.m. Families can enjoy carnival rides, try their luck at game booths, and take a photo with the festival’s iconic Gumbo Pot. Craft booths will offer visitors an early start on Christmas shopping. And, of course, there is gumbo. Those who believe their gumbo can compete with some of the best are invited to test their recipes during the Gumbo Festival CookOff on Oct. 11. The festival at the Westwego Farmers and Fisheries Market, 484 Sala Ave., opens at 6 p.m. Oct. 9, at noon Oct. 10, and at 11 a.m. Oct. 11. Admission is $5 per person, with children up to 38 inches taller admitted free. For additional festival information, visit thegumbofestival.com.

URSULINE ACADEMY: Ursuline has officially kicked off its tricentennial year. On Traditions Day in September, a celebration honoring nearly 300 years of Ursuline history, traditions, and impact in New Orleans, the
day began with a Mass at St. Louis Cathedral, following a procession and presentation of lilies before the Our Lady of Prompt Succor statue. After Mass, alumnae second-lined to Antoine’s Restaurant for a luncheon, where Mayor Helena Moreno presented a proclamation to the Academy and a key to the city to Sister Carolyn Marie Brockland, O.S.U., on behalf of the Ursuline Sisters. The day’s events also included the unveiling of a streetcar sculpture donated by the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation and designed by Ursuline students. Among the Ursuline alumnae and community leaders at the celebration were former U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, class of 1973; Madeleine Landrieu, class of 1980; Deb Augustine Grant, class of 1970; Laurie Leiva, Academy president; and the Rev. Ajani K. Gibson, Academy chaplain.

The 5K begins at 8:30 a.m. and follows a 3.1-mile course along the oak-lined streets of Metairie Cemetery. One important note before arriving with a fourlegged running partner: the race is for humans only. Dogs and their caregivers are welcome to cheer from the sidelines and participate in other activities before and after the race. Following the 5K, Heaven’s Pets at Lake Lawn Metairie will hold its annual Blessing of the Pets at 9:30 a.m. Pets of all shapes and sizes are welcome to the free blessing, which celebrates the animals currently sharing our lives and offers an opportunity to remember those we’ve lost. Heaven’s Pets has provided pet bereavement, memorialization, and cremation services to area families for more than 20 years. This marks the fifth year the Race to the Rescue has been held at Metairie Cemetery in conjunction with its annual blessing. There will also be food and refreshments, an awards ceremony, an online auction featuring items from local businesses, and, because this is New Orleans, sno-balls from Plum Street Snoballs. If you plan to bring your four-legged family members to the festivities, a little preparation can make the morning more enjoyable for everyone. Before bringing your dog along, make sure it’s comfortable around crowds, unfamiliar people, and other animals. A large pet event isn’t the best place to test how a nervous or reactive dog will handle a busy environment.

Costumes can be fun, but a pet’s comfort should always come first. Avoid anything that restricts movement, vision, or breathing. If Fido clearly isn’t enjoying its ensemble, let Fido attend in its birthday suit. He won’t be underdressed. Remember that not every dog enjoys a big social event. Leaving the pets at home doesn’t make us any less of a pet lover. Anyone can still participate in the 5K, support the rescue organizations, and enjoy the festivities without bringing the pets along. Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. at Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchar-

understand your finances, make informed decisions, and take a more active role in building long-term financial stability. Series topics include cash flow maximization, debt management, student loan forgiveness, and retirement funds and income. Light refreshments will be served. The REACH Center is located inside the Corpus Christi Epiphany Church Community Center, 2022 St. Bernard Ave. Visit reach.nolalibrary.org for details and registration.
Virtual author talk Smithsonian curator Carolyn Russo will visit the New Orleans Public Library via Zoom at 1 p.m.
Oct. 8 to discuss her book “The Ascent of Rauschenberg.” Most famous for his groundbreaking “Combines” — painting and sculpture hybrids that often incorporated everyday objects — American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) created within a range of media, including collage, performance, photography, and printmaking. But a connective tissue through it all was his fascination with flight. “The Ascent of Rauschenberg” explores the flight motif across his work, spanning birds, insects, aviation, spaceflight, sensory experiences, and metaphors for his own life. Russo curates the art collection at the Smithsonian’s National
Air and Space Museum. She has lectured internationally on the subject of art and flight and is the author of several publications including “The Ascent of Rauschenberg: Reinventing the Art of Flight”; “Art of the Airport Tower; In Plane View: Abstractions of Flight”; and “Women and Flight: Portraits of Contemporary Women Pilots.” Visit nolalibrary.co/russo to register and submit your questions for the author.
Free yoga series The REACH Center is partnering with YEAH! Yoga to host a free 12-week Saturday morning class from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., starting Oct. 3.
These welcoming, beginnerfriendly classes combine gentle movement, stretching, breathing, mindfulness, strength-building, and rest. Classes are open to all ages, bodies, abilities, and experience levels, with chair-based options available. Located inside the Corpus Christi Epiphany Church Community Center (2022 St. Bernard Ave.), the REACH Center aims to be a thriving community center that empowers individuals and businesses to reach their full potential. Jane LeGros is the director of marketing and communications for the New Orleans Public Library.
