Arts Council offers summer classes

Cruisin Da Bayou Three days of music and cars at the Cruisin Da Bayou 2026 Car Show hosted at the Tickfaw River Village Campground is set for May 22-24 in Springfield. Event kicks off Friday with a party at the campground featuring music by Trent Bourgeois. Visit the event Facebook page for preregistration details. On Sunday there is a Cruise Run with fun run stops at Black Lake Club, Manny’s, Boone Docks Bar and Grill, Moonlight inn, Fred’s on the River, Daiquiri Shack, Kats’s Warsaw Bar & Grill, Bayhi’s Landing and Boopaulu’s Bar and Grill. Call the camp ground to book your camper spot or cabin. All car show and cruise participants must pre-register.
Calligraphy classes Learn flat edge calligraphy during a Southeaster Lifelong Learning class at 10 a.m. June 9 in Walker Foundations of Lettering is a beginner-friendly workshop where you’ll learn the art of elegant lettering step-by-step. Class of ’76 reunion It’s almost time to celebrate for the Denham Springs Class of 1976 — my class. We were called the Spirit of ‘76 class and everything was red, white in blue in addition to our high school colors. Adults tried to make us understand the importance of celebrating the country’s 200th birthday, but I’m not sure that clicked with a bunch of 17- and 18-year-olds. The event is planned for June 13 at Forrest Grove in Denham Springs. Reunion organizers are asking classmates to send photos from 1976 and now for a booklet. From Andy Warhol to Juneteenth to jewelry-making, the Arts Council of Livingston Parish has something to appeal to children of all ages during the summer. Also included on the summer menu are classes in machine sewing, dancing, drawing and watercolors. “We try to offer something for everybody, although this year we do not have as many performing arts classes,” council vice president Melani Glascock said. “We definitely want to provide the opportunity for the kids to learn all kinds of arts.” One of the summer’s highlights, Glascock said, is council President Gayle Cothell leading a class on machine sewing. Livingston baseball comes close in state playoffs Maurepas carried the flag for Livingston parish last week as its lone school to make it to a baseball state championship game. Although the Wolves fell to Claiborne Christian, 8-0, in the Class C title game, there were still opportunities once the dust settled last week. Alex Aime, Zephaniah Clements and Kade Penalber all signed letters of intent to play baseball next season for John Melvin University. All three players were named all-district 7-C, including a Most Valuable Player award for Penalber, who earned the distinction for the third consecutive year. Penalber went 10-2 with a 1.59 ERA and 91 strikeouts for a Maurepas team that finished 25-10. When he wasn’t pitching, Penalber played shortstop. He was also a tough out at the plate hitting .454 with two homers and 42 RBI. Clements played whichever outfield position the Wolves needed him to, and hit .260 with 28 stolen
