agencies and more than 6,000 communities nationwide, according to the Flock’s website. Across the country, 90,000 Flock license plate readers have been deployed, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Exactly how many are in Lafayette isn’t clear, but according to Deflock, a self-reporting website, there are more than 100 cameras in and around the city. They are placed along major thoroughfares like University Avenue, West Congress Street and Camelia Boulevard. More than 20
cameras are installed across the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus. LPD confirmed it owns Flock ALPRs but did not provide details of a contract or associated costs. And costs can vary. One Indiana sheriff’s office paid $5 per camera, while a California police department paid $300,000 under a two-year contract with the company, according to CBS News and Columbus-based media outlet The Republic.
