New Orleans police have arrested two men in a recent shooting at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant that left one man dead and three patrons wounded, a major step toward bringing closure to a highprofile tragedy that roiled residents and the city’s tourism and business communities.. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said Thursday that Makahi Kelly, 18, is accused of pulling the trigger outside Dooky Chase’s on Orleans Avenue the night of Jan. 16 and that Anthony Johnson, 22, is believed to have been his wheelman. Kelly was booked into the Orleans Parish jail Wednesday on a count of second-degree murder, while Johnson was booked with principal to second-degree murder, according to police and online court records. If charged and ultimately convicted on those counts, both would face life in prison without parole. Kirkpatrick thanked the FBI and other partners for helping her staff comb hours of surveillance and follow up on the tips that eventually led to the arrests. She also directly apologized to a shooting victim from California and to the public, saying the tragic event was no reflection on the historic Dooky Chase’s or the city as a whole.

Shuttered Upperline gets new life La Petite Grocery owners plan venture in historic space

BY IAN McNULTY Staff writer

Upperline restaurant was among the most consequential closures for the New Orleans dining scene during the pandemic. In the years since, the future of its historic Uptown property has stirred much speculation among local restaurant aficionados. Finally, the wheels are in motion for what will come next.

Chef Justin Devillier and Mia Devillier, owners of the Uptown restaurant La Petite Grocery, have purchased the property at 1413 Upperline St. from JoAnn Clevenger and her husband, Alan Greenacre. They will develop a new restaurant here, with an opening date slated for late in 2026, perhaps in the fall. Joel Dondis, a founder of La Petite Grocery and the couple’s longtime business partner in that restaurant, is also a partner in the new restaurant. The new owners weren’t ready to discuss details of the restaurant concept, including its name.

But Mia Devillier confirmed it would be a new restaurant, and not a reopening or continuation of Upperline. That’s a critical distinction. When a restaurant as significant as Upperline is up for sale, one question is whether new owners will try to rekindle it as their own or create something new. In this case, the Devilliers intend to open a new chapter for a space with a long history. “The building and the location feel like a dream to us,” Mia Devillier said. “We’re so excited to be carrying on the legacy and start
