A Taste of Christmas

Ascension Catholic went on the road to face top ranked Westminster Christian in the Division IV semifinals with one thing in mind: knock the door down. The Bulldogs have been to the semifinals two of the last three years, only to fall short. ACHS dominated the game and came away with a 4514 victory
The Bulldogs will face the second seeded Riverside in the finals at 3:30 p.m. Thursday Dec. 11.

“This team has been close several times to playing for a state championship, we talked about knocking the door down, play our game and give us a chance to play for a state championship. I am proud of this group of players, coaches and support staff. Our support from the school, the parents, community, supporters of the program has been phenomenal,” coach Taylor James said.
James in his first season as the head coach takes the Bulldogs back to the Caesars Superdome for the first time since 2017-18 when the Bulldogs went in back-to-back seasons.
ACHS (11-2) jumped out to 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind running back Trevin Simon’s two touchdown runs. Simon finished with 367 yards rushing and six touchdowns. Those numbers pushed his season total to 3,768 rushing yards and 57 rushing touchdowns. He passed Xavier Ford, of Leesville, for the single season rushing record and touchdown record. Ford had 3,467 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns. These numbers are phenomenal, and James continues to be amazed by what his senior has accomplished.
“He is so humble and continues to give credit to his teammates and coaches,” James said. “Trevin is one of our leaders and hardest workers. He takes care of his business in the classroom; a college program will be lucky to have him on their campus. All he talks about is finishing and our team will have that opportunity against a very good Riverside team.”
The Bulldogs added three touchdowns in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 33-0 at the half. Simon added two more touchdowns and quarterback Greg Fernandez added a 37yard rushing touchdown. The Bulldog defense forced four punts and did not allow a first down until late in the second quarter

Blanchard, Joshua Barber Christopher Anthens, Kole Folse, Dayveon Geason, Hayden Turner and Peyton Ledet provided pressure all night against an offense that averaged nearly 50 points a game. The second half saw both teams score two touchdowns each. Simon added two rushing touchdowns and Westminster QB Steven George threw touchdown passes to Evan Lemon and Damien Thomas for the final tally
We played a complete game, the players executed the plan, and our offensive and defensive lines were good. Our defense backs were challenged all week, and they answered the call,” said James.
Bulldog defensive back Jacob Julien snatched his sixth interception of the season. Corners Cy Landry and Kamryn Schexnayder were tasked with covering the speedy receivers and answered the call.
Defensive back Shane Aucoin along with linebackers Daigle and Raif Melancon tackled Crusader back Kyle Horde, who is 6-2, 225 pounds. Simon played in the secondary and provided athleticism and leadership.
Melancon led with 12 tackles followed by Daigle with 11. Anthens and Folse led with two tackles for loss and Blanchard had one. Landry had four breakups.
James understands what his team will face this week and the challenges they present. “Riverside is a complete team; they are well coached and have outstanding athletes,” James said. “Our guys will prepare and compete just like they have all season long. This team is not just satisfied with getting to the dome, they want to finish it, but they understand the challenge. All we can ask for is for a chance and we have that.
“Our school, fans and supporters will be there to support us on Thursday for sure. The players have done everything we have asked of them, they will have an opportunity to do something that hasn’t been done since 1992.”
