Cars carrying hundreds of children dressed in costume received candy and goodie bags from local Ascension businesses during the fifth annual Arc of East Ascension Trunk-or-Treat drive thru.
Families patiently waited in cars along Worthey Street in Gonzales to receive goodies Oct. 15. To help treaters feel comfortable, families remained in vehicles while vendors passed out the treats.
Ascension Parish government, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Gonzales Jambalaya Festival Association helped provide volunteers, traffic control and jambalaya.

Griffins, Bulldogs and Gators win
Lions make history with victory
The Ascension Christian Lions made football history as they routed White Castle, 40-12, to win over them for the first time in school history
The offense capitalized on several White Castle turnovers, with quarterback Leron McDowell leading the way McDowell passed for 189 yards and accounted for four touchdowns. Kason Tanner and Preston LeBlanc were the main targets. Tanner had 10 catches and two touchdowns. LeBlanc added a touchdown catch. Luke Denton had a rushing touchdown
The Lion defense intercepted two passes, one each by Taylor Painter and Leroy McDowell. The Lions moved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in District 8-1A.
Ascension Christian has a pivotal game at St. John on Thursday in week 9. Ascension Catholic 50, North Iberville 28
The Bulldogs ran for nearly 300 yards, with Trevin Simon leading the way with 201 yards and 4 touchdowns in a key district game on the road. ACHS (6-2, 3-0) takes the lead in District 8-1A with a road game at White Castle this Thursday.
Quarterback Greg Fernandez tossed a touchdown pass to Cy Landry Landry led the Bulldogs with five catches. Joshua Barber added a touchdown and 40 yards rushing.
The Bulldog defense played outstanding in the first half against the top ranked team in nonselect D4. They held the Bears to under 100 yards and one score.

Senior linemen Vaughn Blanchard Chris Anthens and Barber along with Kole Folse and Peyton Ledet played well up front. Blanchard had an interception on a screen pass and lateraled it to Folse for a defensive touchdown.
Anthens picked up a Bear fumble to set ACHS in great field position. Anthens led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles and one sack.
Linebacker John Rob Daigle had 10 tackles. Defensive back Shane Aucoin had eight tackles Defensive back Jacob Julien was assigned to cover Bears star Brajon Melancon, and he had a good day, only allowing two catches and a touchdown.
Coach Taylor James continues to praise his offense but really liked his defense last week. “We challenged those guys this week, it has been a learning curve this season. We faced a good offense with lots of speed Our attention to detail was there all week. Would have liked to close it out a little cleaner, but for three quarters, they were outstanding. The play by Blanchard and Folse, that is just dudes being dudes. Our team is having fun and playing for each other, no selfishness and the coaches love seeing it,” said James.
ACHS will travel to White Castle on Thursday
Dutchtown 19, Walker 14
The Griffins (5-2, 3-1) beat

Walker in a defensive battle to remain tied for first place in District 5-5A. Coach Guy Mistretta was happy with the victory but knows his team needs to play better with the playoffs approaching.
“We really didn’t play up to our standards and made it much more difficult than it should have been,” Mistretta said. “That being said, we showed a good deal of heart and grit to make plays down the stretch.”
Quarterback Owen Fletcher passed for 153 yards, ran for 78 yards and added a touchdown. Running back Maki Hill had 89 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Carter Hedden was all purpose with 47 yards rushing, 73 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Mistretta knows this a big week, especially with the log jam atop the district with EA, Denham Springs and the Griffins
“We are looking forward to our game this week at home against East Ascension, another opportunity to compete,” Mistretta said.
