Metairie man wins his 6th spelling bee. Find out his s-e-c-r-e-t to success.

BY MADDIE SCOTT Staff writer

The Jefferson Parish East Bank Regional Library has hosted adult spelling bees for 11 years, and one man has won six of them. His name is John Lipani. That’s L-I-P-A-N-I, Lipani. The soft-spoken speller reads three to five books a week, cracks

jokes when you least expect it and knows pockets of information on a vast number of topics. “I’ve read on Kindles and iPads and all, but I like having a book in my hands,” Lipani said.

Who is John Lipani? His weekday morning routine includes waking up at 3:30 a.m. and arriving at the gym an hour

later, in line “with all the other old people,” he said with a chuckle. He enjoys browsing the library, though he’s conquered certain sections over the years, like the sports section, so he’s moved onto other areas. He survived a subdural hematoma, or a brain bleed, in 2019

The New Orleans metro has really become a dog park community, with so many wonderful outdoor spaces to take the pets and several designed specifically for off-leash fun. We are also seeing several dog-friendly restaurant and bar options as well, some with off-leash areas for the pups to mingle, too. Traci While the idea of Howerton bringing the dogs to ANIMAL a pet-friendly park or RESCUE bar is a good one, the outing can quickly turn sour if the humans — yes, the humans — do not follow the rules. Here are some tips to make a dogfriendly outing a positive experience for all — pets and people alike: THE MAIN RULE: Dogs that are not dog-friendly do not belong at the dog park or bar. As much as we may want our dog to run and play with other dogs, if he prefers to be a loner, bringing him to a dog friendly venue is not a good idea. Do not risk the safety of your pet, other dogs or people if your dog is not social. A walk on the levee or around the neighborhood on a leash may be a better alternative and still makes for great, outdoor quality time together. PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS: If the family canine does not share well with others, the dog park may not be right for him. The potential for disaster greatly increases if a dog does not do well with sharing personal space, toys, water bowls, their humans or treats. OFF-LEASH MEANS JUST THAT: Owners new to the dog park world and the off-leash concept may attempt to keep their dog on a leash to feel more secure. This is a bad idea. It will actually make a dog feel more insecure and can trigger fights. Dogs need to feel there are on equal footing with the other dogs around. PUT DOWN THE PHONE: Sometimes
