Summer volunteers are needed at area animal shelters

As the school year winds down, with college students preparing for exams and high school students finishing up their service hours, there’s a sharp decline in volunteers at our local shelters and rescues. Just a couple of Traci weeks ago, there Howerton was a waiting list ANIMAL for time slots at RESCUE Animal Rescue New Orleans as so many students were trying to get those last-minute service hours completed. Now, it’s crickets in my inbox. Yet, the need for help at animal shelters doesn’t stop when last school bell rings. ARNO is a volunteer-based organization and could not run its daily operations without them. Volunteers provide much-needed assistance to shelter staff and help contribute to the mental health, socialization and overall happiness of the animals waiting for forever homes. During the school year, high school and college students fulfilling community service requirements by volunteering at animal shelters and rescues play a critical role in helping to meet the day-to-day needs of shelter pets, in addition to giving homeless animals extra attention, playtime and exercise. Caring for shelter pets is a 365-days-a-year job. The animals need to be fed, walked and socialized, and kennels need to be cleaned every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. Giving time to help these animals while they wait for a home is a very rewarding experience and it makes a world of difference for the pets. The summer months, however, are especially hard for shelters and rescues since even volunteers who aren’t students often get out of their normal routines. Folks go on vacation, the kids are home from school. This leads to a sharp decline in the day-to-day help animal shelters depend on.
