Oral history database preserves African Americans’ takes on life BY ROBERT S. WOLF

Local chef and civil rights pioneer Leah Chase died in 2019, but at the New Orleans Public Library, you still can watch her discuss the struggle for civil rights during the 1960s. That’s thanks to an oral history database called The HistoryMakers that contains more than 3,000 interviews with African Ameri“All of the interviews cans from across the are fairly contemporary, U.S. who helped shape but many of the stories the country. Is your pet in pain? Here are some things to look for

Traci Howerton ANIMAL RESCUE

Pets can be great at hiding pain. Unlike a small child who runs a temperature or cries when he feels unwell, our pets cannot tell us when they are feeling pain. Cats are especially known for concealing sickness. Chronic conditions such as heart disease, dental or kidney

disease could be present, and we may not even realize it. This means that pet owners often do not know there is a problem until the condition is advanced. This is why regular checkups with the vet and being observant of a pet’s physical appearance and behaviors are important

for early detection of medical issues. While we may not always be able to tell if there is an underlying medical condition, there are signs that a pet may be in pain. These may be different for dogs and cats.

Cats need regular vet visits, just like dogs do. There are lots of reasons, but a big one is this: Cats are known for concealing sickness and pain, but a vet might pick up on them.
