DOWNTOWN ZACHARY TURNS INTO WINTER WONDERLAND

The Zachary City Council has tapped the brakes on implementing a moratorium barring residential development, tabling the matter until the panel’s second meeting in January. The council, at its Nov. 26 meeting, introduced an ordinance that would stop construction of many homes. The idea has been talked about for years as Zachary struggles with infrastructure woes and a growing populaWestmoreland tion. Councilwoman Brandy Westmoreland, who proposed the measure, asked her colleagues at their Dec. 10 meeting to delay voting to adopt the moratorium ordinance. “I’m not ready to execute this,” she said. After talking to several developers and a land attorney since introducing the moratorium, Westmoreland said she believes there may be other ways to solve infrastructure problems and to curb the pace of residential development. She said she also wants to see a copy of the city’s new master plan, which is under development and nearing completion, and organize workshops with her fellow council members to discuss ideas before voting on the moratorium.

Many of them have been or will be rewarded by holiday travel to participate in bowl games. Take Chandler Whitfield, 2019 ZHS graduate and two-time 5A state champion (2017-18) who was

named the outstanding performer at the Bayou Classic against Grambling on Nov. 30. The senior wide receiver made the play of the day with a one-handed 41-yard touchdown catch. Whitfield finished with 134 yards and a touchdown on five catches in a Jaguars 24-24 victory over the Tigers. Also in the Bayou Classic, former Bronco sophomore Tylon Williams (2021 state champion) recorded a 97-yard kickoff return for a
