2,500 expected for Thanksgiving dinner Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office says volunteers needed BY EVA JACOB BARKOFF Contributing writer
The first time that Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson walked into the Ernest M. Morial Convention Center during her office’s annual Thanksgiving holiday event, she immediately jumped in to help. “I brought plates of food to the tables for our guests and then took time to talk to many of them,” Hutson recalled of her experience three years ago. “You could immediately feel it was holidays, and that is how it should be. It was truly an amazing, experience, and I am excited to celebrate its 50th anniversary.” This year, more than 2,500 people are expected to attend the
event planned for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the convention center. Those attending include parish residents who are economically insecure, residing in assisted living facilities and homeless shelters. In addition to a traditional holiday meal, there will be raffles, coat giveaways and live music by wellknown performers Irma Thomas, Leo Nocentelli and other surprise guests. Casey McGee, chief communications officer for the Sheriff’s Office, said the event needs about 200 volunteers. “We ask volunteers to assist with distributing the holiday meal, STAFF FILE PHOTO BY SCOTT THRELKELD greeting guests and ensuring Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, right, talks to Jerry Cook at last guests have an enjoyable time,” year’s event, which served thousands of meals. Hutson said she is excited for her office to again host the celebration, marking its 50th anniversary. “This department has a tough job to do every day and the event is our way of giving,” Hutson said. “We love this community and want to support the city and its citizens in any way we can.” For more information about the event or to volunteer, go to www. opso.gov.

Mutually beneficial: Studies show that pet ownership can have lots of advantages for older people, including health benefits. Owning a pet offers increased opportunities for exercise, contributes to overall feelings of purpose, combats loneliness and provides opportunities to socialize with others. Senior pets are often great options for senior people because they are usually calm, quiet and usually require less maintenance. It seems like a no-brainer, right? So how do we connect senior people with seniors of the four-legged variety?
