2,500 expected for Thanksgiving dinner Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office says volunteers needed BY EVA JACOB BARKOFF Contributing writer
The first time that Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson walked into the Ernest M. Morial Convention Center during her office’s annual Thanksgiving holiday event, she immediately jumped in to help. “I brought plates of food to the tables for our guests and then took time to talk to many of them,” Hutson recalled of her experience three years ago. “You could immediately feel it was holidays, and that is how it should be. It was truly an amazing, experience, and I am excited to celebrate its 50th anniversary.” This year, more than 2,500 people are expected to attend the
event planned for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the convention center. Those attending include parish residents who are economically insecure, residing in assisted living facilities and homeless shelters. In addition to a traditional holiday meal, there will be raffles, coat giveaways and live music by wellknown performers Irma Thomas, Leo Nocentelli and other surprise guests. continue to do so,” Sams said. “I see this celebration as a place of caring and an opportunity for others to give back to the community. “This is a chance for those who otherwise would be alone to have a good meal and spend time breaking bread with others.” Sams said food is donated by Summit Correctional Services, the contractor that provides meals for the jail and the staff kitchen. “And there are several other companies that donate things like rolls and drinks,” she added. Hutson said she is excited for her office to again host the celebration, marking its 50th anniversary. “This department has a tough job to do every day and the event is our way of giving,” Hutson said. “We love this community and want to support the city and its citizens in any way we can.” For more information about the event or to volunteer, go to www. opso.gov.
