Shedding is probably one of the most irritating aspects of owning a pet. Regardless of age or breed, all dogs and cats (except for a few hairless breeds) shed to some degree, with some more than others. Animals shed to get rid of old, damaged or extra hair, and commonly go through two shedding seasons: spring and fall. Traci SHEDDING IS NORMAL: Pets lose hair as Howerton the weather changes from one season ANIMAL to the next. So, as the fall weather starts RESCUE to kick in, our pets will start a shedding season. While we cannot eliminate shedding, we can lessen the amount of hair on our furniture, flooring and clothing by making sure pets have regular brushing, grooming and proper nutrition. THE BREED MATTERS: The breed of the dog is a good indicator of how much it will shed. For example, a German shepherd or Labrador will shed much more — and more often — than a ADVOCATE PHOTO BY RAEGAN LABAT poodle, Maltese or Shih Brushing your dog removes dead Tzu. hair and distributes natural oils for a What may seem like healthy coat. If a person is prone to allergies, they would do better with a breed that is considered hypoallergenic, as these breeds will have little to nonshedding coats and produce less dander than the heavier-shedding breeds. BRUSHING HELPS: Brushing the dog at least once a week, regardless of breed, can help reduce the amount of hair all over the house. Some dogs require much more frequent brushings, but once a week is a good starting point. THE BRUSH MATTERS: For double-coated breeds, such as huskies, chows, collies, golden retrievers and
