Four years ago, Marquies Gray Jr. and his younger brother, Mason, were struggling to solve math problems. Their mother, Lavonzell Nicholson, enrolled them in a tutoring program called Make It Count Math. Today, things are different for both of her children. “Recently, I have been trying to understand how to multiply decimals,” said Marquies, 12, a sixth-grade student. “It was so confusing to me. But after practicing different problems, it’s not really that hard for me. “I am way better at math now, and it has helped me have more confidence in “When I started the myself. The program provides tutoring lessons year-round for kindergarten to eighth grades throughout New Orleans. “When I started the program, it was during the COVID pandemic, and virtual learning was new and challenging for teachers, students, and parents,” Levy said. “Students were unable to access math in a joyful and exploratory way. “So, I began by providing the sessions virtually for students in addition to their other virtual learning options. The biggest challenge was that there weren’t enough hours in the day, and I couldn’t access all the students that would have benefited.”

At 15, Morrigan, a tenderhearted dachshund, wants nothing more than a home to enjoy her senior years in. This cutie is solarpowered and thrives off having outdoor leisure time. She still has some pep in her step and eagerly shows affection through snuggling. She’d make a welcome addition to a home with other dogs or children. November is National Adopt a Senior Pet month. Being in a shelter is difficult for any animal, but it can be especially tough on older pets. Often, seniors are surrendered to shelters once their health begins Traci to decline. Companion animals that Howerton may have spent their entire lives ANIMAL with a family are scared, confused RESCUE and can become depressed if they suddenly find themselves in a shelter. Seniors in shelters often get overlooked,

as families looking to adopt usually want a young dog or a puppy. I currently have two senior dogs, ages 17 and 14. In 2020, we adopted Romeo when he was 10 years old. Prior to finding himself in a shelter, he had been with the same family since he was a puppy. He was confused and it took him several months to trust us. But today, he is the sweetest lap
