Krewe of Dolly helps get books to New Orleans kids through Parton’s program BY EVA JACOB BARKOFF Contributing writer

One thing you can say about members of the Krewe of Dolly, who wear bold costumes with big, blonde wigs for parades and special events: They know how to have fun. But there’s more to their tribute to musician Dolly Parton than just costuming. The krewe also has taken up Parton’s cause of spreading a love of reading. The krewe has partnered with a program called Imagination Library, which is part of

the Dollywood Foundation that promotes literacy by providing free books every month for children from birth to age 5, totaling 60 books for each child. After starting small in a single New Orleans ZIP code, the program will be expanding next year. “‘Dolly Parton’s America’ is a podcast, and her (Parton’s) message of love, kindness and inclusion was what we wanted to spread to others,” said Wentz, the founding president
