Master teacher Jessica Carmean, of Bissonet Plaza Elementary in Metairie, has been selected as one of only 12 teachers from around the country to participate in the inaugural Fellows Program of the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching. She’s come a long way from the day her family migrated from Honduras to the United States. The language barrier made academics hard for the young Carmean, but that changed when her fifth grade teacher, Donna STAFF PHOTO BY BRETT DUKE Hardee at Ella Pittman Elementary School in Harvey, noticed something about her. Microchipping pets should be part of hurricane plan Hurricane season officially started on June 1, but we know that the season doesn’t really heat up until right about now. We are officially in the peak of hurricane season. Hopefully, it will remain quiet in the Gulf of Mexico, but we need to be prepared and make sure we have our plans in place should we need to evacuate. This includes makTraci ing sure our pets Howerton have a collar with ANIMAL identification and RESCUE that they are microchipped. Prepare now. Once a storm is in the Gulf, it may be too late. Each year, an estimated 10 million dogs and cats are lost in the U.S., and 1 in 3 pets will become lost at some point during their lives. Pets get anxious, too, and the stress of evacuating or sheltering in place for a storm may cause a dog to go into flight mode. The last thing anyone needs is a missing pet before, during or after a storm. Should Fido go missing — because it can happen to even the most responsible pet owners — having him chipped and wearing identification will give him the best chance of getting home to his family. PROPER IDENTIFICATION: A secure, buckle collar with an identification tag that includes current contact information is critical. This is the fastest way for someone who finds a lost dog to get in touch with an owner. MICROCHIPPING: A vet can insert a little chip, the size of a grain of rice, under the animal’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. This microchip has a unique number on it that can be picked up and read by a scanner. The procedure takes seconds and offers secure, reliable, unique and permanent identification. Unlike a collar with tags, a pet’s microchip cannot fall off or be removed. The veterinarian can scan and locate the chip at annual visits to ensure that the chip has not moved and can still be easily detected.
I could not pronounce the word correctly in front of the class. “Ms. Hardee found out why I was reluctant and came over to me and whispered, ‘bring something in Spanish.’ It was a small gesture but meant so much to me. It was a way for her to make a connection with me, and that made a huge difference in my confidence concerning both my work and my identity.” That early vote of confidence, along with a continuing dedication both inside and outside the classroom, led to her selection as is one of four teachers from Louisiana selected for the NIET program.
