Bains students plant seeds of knowledge Community news report In the 2023-24 school year, all pre-K and kindergarten students at Bains Lower Elementary learned about nutrition and gardening through Play 60. Each month, the students met with Layne Langley, area nutrition and community health agent with the LSU AgCenter, and Play 60 coach Lanya Mayer. The pre-K students learned from the OrganWise Guys: PROVIDED PHOTO plush organ characters such as Murphy Fuller holds carrots grown in a school Sid and Kid the Kidney Brothers, Hardy Heart, Sir Rebrum garden.

the Brain and Calci M. Bone entertained the students monthly with stories and activities about human organs. The kindergartners became members of the Green Thumb Club. They learned about MyPlate and the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy that Langley highlighted each month. Children learned about the foods in each group and the benefits of consuming them. Activities like the Great Grain Obstacle and the Colors of the Rainbow reinforced the lessons

on grains and fruits and vegetables. At the end of each lesson, Langley reinforced the nutrition lesson with items such as an apple bookmark, a pencil with fruits and vegetables, and a food tray sticker with breakfast item stickers for the children to place on each part of the tray. Langley also sent home nutrition resources to the parents and guardians each month. At the start of the school year, students helped prepare the 10 raised beds for planting. The pre-K and kindergartners plant-

ed kale; carrot and radish seeds; and cucumber, broccoli and cabbage transplants. They helped water and care for the plants. In April, the pre-K students participated in a garden scavenger hunt. They worked in teams to find items in the garden that were certain colors. Most of the teams found the shovel when asked to locate something red in the garden. The kindergartners also participated in a scavenger hunt.

St. Francisville teen killed in single-vehicle crash Community news report A West Feliciana High student who ran track and played football died Friday morning in a single vehicle crash. The early-morning crash on La. 78, west of La. 1 in Pointe Coupee Parish, claimed the life of Rayshon M. Franklin Jr., who was entering his senior year at West Feliciana High. Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a single-vehicle crash. His football coach said Franklin’s team and coaches will miss his infectious smile, and have decided to dedicate the upcoming season to Franklin. “We are devastated by the loss of our brother and teammate Rayshon Franklin,” coach Devin Decote. “Rayshon was a great young man who loved to compete on the field and on the track. He was a highly respected and trustworthy teammate. He was a very hard worker and extremely respectful. Rayshon had an infectious smile that could light up a room. “He was the type of young man you wanted on your team, and he will be missed tremendously,” the coach added. The preliminary investigation indicated that a 2007 Toyota Camry, driven by Franklin, was traveling eastbound on La. 78, west of La. 1. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota exited the roadway to the right, entered a ditch, overturned, and then struck a tree. Franklin, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Impairment is not suspected, however, standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. “Rayshon was a student athlete who played football and ran track,” said West Feliciana Schools Superintendent Hollis Milton. “Rayshon was known as a well mannered, kind student who always had a smile. Please pray for his family and friends and our community.”
