Never stop learning! Always push yourself to think outside the box and continue to learn new techniques by going on courses and researching new methods in the industry; this will ensure you are always ahead of your competition!

MONDAY

THURSDAY

The start of the week is all about training and education and I start my morning by welcoming our new Partner Salon sign-ups who are here to learn our Gold Class extensions process.

Today is one of the days I spend in my salon in central London. I try and work three days a week in the salon looking after my regular clientele which ranges from younger professionals to women looking for a great cut and service. It’s one of my favourite days of the week as many of my clients have been with me since we opened the salon 20 years ago.

In this workshop I teach them all about my pre-bonded application methods and demonstrate the benefit of our extensions. I love training and sharing my expertise with those who are passionate about hair extensions and it’s always great to meet stylists and extensionists from around the UK and overseas!

TUESDAY Tuesdays are always reserved for my private, VIP and celebrity clients. Sometimes they come to the salon, but more often my husband and business partner Joe has the pleasure of chauffeuring me to their house! I work with some really great people including Elle MacPherson, Maya Jama, Rochelle Humes and Katie Piper.

WEDNESDAY This is the day when I get to play around and be creative, so you’ll find me experimenting with hair pieces or doing online research for hair inspiration for upcoming photoshoots, or new techniques. I recently created a collection for our new Gold Class Hair campaign showcasing the different textures that we offer. It was such a great day and the images have been featured in publications across the globe.

FRIDAY Today’s a great day to chat with the team to find out what’s inspiring them and to see what they’re creating. Spending time with them really helps to keep me inspired too! While I’m in the salon we’ll go through our social media strategy, catch up with our PR and marketing team and look at plans for the months ahead.

SATURDAY Today’s a busy day packed with a variety of clients; my weekly blow dry clients and six-weekly cut and style clients plus a few gents too. I love having a variety of tasks but extensions are where I really come to life and get to be creative.

SUNDAY Unless I have a bridal client or travelling abroad for a client, Sunday is my only day where I get to spend some quality time with my family. Although we all work together at the salon - my husband and two daughters – it’s lovely to have one day where we can switch off and just have a chill-out day at home! SPRING SUMMER 2025 / 7

NEW BLONDE. NEW ME.

STYLE DIRECTORY

EFFORTLESS, BEDHEAD VIBES

A key style from the SS25 catwalks was that quintessentially effortless, just-got-out-of-bed look. At 16Arlington lead stylist Sam McKnight gave models sultry waves that were then brushed out, to almost look slept-in. Here some of our faves share how they like to recreate this undone look.

“This effortless look is always a popular request and is incredibly easy to recreate!

The most important part is to work on getting that volume throughout, and that starts with a volumising shampoo and conditioner. Once the hair is damp you can use a sea salt spray for some gorgeous texture. Dry the hair using a large barrel brush, focusing on lifting the hair, then once dry, take a large crimper tool and lightly crimp the hair from roots to ends – be sure to have a light touch for a really soft look. Once complete, allow to cool and lightly brush out.” Nicholas James

As androgynous fashion becomes mainstream with more women wearing menswear at work and play it only makes sense to see them experimenting with masculine haircuts too. For Tom Ross Metcalf of Marc Antoni this is an exciting time.

For Diana Carson of the Rainbow Room International Artistic Team, there’s nothing better.

“The image above comes from my current collection and my vision was to create a look that was completely gender neutral; a look that any individual could wear with pride. Opting for a shorter side section, I chose to keep the length longer around the crown section to create a much more unique statement, contrasting the colours – platinum blonde and a deep brunette. The main styling tip is texture; use a matte paste with a medium hold to allow you to mould the look and ensure it lasts the duration.”

12 / THE CAPITAL CUT

Thanks to clever clipping and a wealth of products aimed at keeping curls soft and touchable, the Teeny Weeny Afro is becoming a go-to for women who want to show their curls but keep them short and sweet. Here’s how Emma Simmons of Salon 54 created this gorgeous, flattering style. “First, I lightened the hair, then, after washing and conditioning, I used a diffuser with curl cream to style. Next, I fluffed out the hair with a pick comb and then used a coloured spray to add the purple tint. I finished by creating a hard parting using my clippers.”

TWA – THE TEENY WEENY AFRO

We offer a short haircut service for all genders, and these are two haircuts we create for our female clients. Although these are traditionally seen as more masculine styles, we love how our client have made them their own, whilst still looking feminine.” Oliver and Lewis, MaxOliver

“A strong and defined bob has always been a favourite of mine and with a strong, blended, blunt fringe it becomes much more of a statement style. To achieve this look it’s essential that you blend the hair seamlessly when drying to avoid any harsh blend lines. When drying, use a medium barrel brush and dry in smaller sections to allow you to control the hair and get that seamless blend.” Andy Heasman, International Creative Director, RUSH Hair

BOBS ‘N’ BANGS

Next apply a small amount of shine serum throughout the hair whilst damp. Section the hair into a middle parting and from the crown, then section again at the nape of the neck. Using a medium barrel brush and a nozzle on the dryer, focus the direction of the heat down, closing the follicles and encouraging high shine. Follow this around the hair, to unveil a sleek and beautiful long-lasting shine. Finish with a light spritz of a professional shine spray.”

Tom Ross Metcalf

“For me the satin blow dry is so classic and oozes luxury. What I love is how it works well on both long and short hair; you just need to use the right products for prep. To achieve the perfect satin blow dry, it’s important that the hair is hydrated and that you prep using a professional hydrating shampoo and conditioner, to nourish the follicles and encourage a beautiful, high shine.

SABRINA CARPENTER’S SHANGRI-LA CUT As well as singing along to her chart-topping songs like Espresso and Please, Please, Please, Sabrina Carpenter’s also got us wishing for her Shangri-La haircut. Simply put, this is a midlength cut that uses a blend of long layers and curtain bangs to create a face-framing halo of volume. Jamie Benny, Creative and Artistic Director of Benny & Co, explains: “The ‘Shangri-La’ cut’s roots trace back to the Hollywood icons of the 50s and 60s, showcasing a super feminine silhouette with a vintage vibe. Having become insanely popular once more thanks to Miss Sabrina Carpenter, this cut is a breath of fresh air that can completely transform long, dull or damaged hair. When it comes to styling, blow drying the hair away from the face will ensure that the hair looks voluminous, whilst creating the illusion of thicker-looking hair.” Now you’ve got the trends, it’s time to make sure you’ve got the tools! HONEY BLONDE

As temperatures (slowly) rise, it’s likely that your clients will be booking in for colour work that gives them a sense of warmth and makes them want to venture outside!

This season’s colour forecast is a mix of warm blondes and cool greys – plus a little root smudging! Read on for how your favourite colour experts are playing with colour for spring/summer.

For Sian Roscoe, UK Indola Ambassador, this honey trend is all down to Pantone’s Colour of the Year: Mocha Mousse. Sian explains:

Jake Nugent, OSMO Ambassador says that the real appeal of honey blonde is its versatility, and that once your usual cooler toned clients go honey, they won’t want to go back. “Honey blonde is a colour defined by its warm golden tones that bring depth, vibrancy, and a radiant, sun-kissed finish. It also complements a wide range of skin tones and works beautifully with various hair textures. It’s the perfect shade for subtle transformations, such as adding highlights to darker hair, or for a bold, full-head colour that exudes warmth and luminosity.

Jake Nugent

“I feel the colour palette is going to be all about the neutrals; tones that are neither too warm nor too cool. So, for me, honey blonde is what we’ll be seeing lots of. These colours are actually a lot more manageable and easier to wear, and when the toners fade out the client won’t be left with that obviously natural yellow warmth coming through; instead their hair will look brighter, lighter and softer.”

Indola

“Even introducing a couple of slightly warmer lowlights on a full blonde can introduce your client to the warmer side. Now is the right time to try it if they’re thinking about it!” says Jake.

Jake Nugent

“Often clients can be a bit scared of going that little bit warmer as all they’ve ever known is ash blonde, but I’ve started introducing them to honey tones and they are loving it! I can change their entire look by just warming up the hair colour and a lot of the time it ends up suiting their skin tone more.

JAKE’S TOP TIP

With these kind of shades aftercare is key as you really want them to shimmer and shine; be sure to recommend weekly deep moisturising treatments.

For Ashley Gamble, honey blonde is a year round solution for blondes who crave warmth. She says:

16 / THE CAPITAL CUT

“I love how honey blonde offers us a real mix of blondes in one, and gives us a multi-dimensional look that’s full of warmth and depth. What’s more, honey blonde is easily transitional in between seasons; it can be lightened as summer approaches or darkened down when the winter months come along.”

CAPITAL / COLOUR

CAPITAL / COLOUR

Michelle’s top three tips for embracing grey 1 Highlights are a great introduction for clients who are growing coloured hair out as they will help blend away any demarcation line.

2 Grey hair has no natural pigment so it can become yellow over time, so the right homecare is essential to keep greys looking fresh.

The image of grey hair has gone through somewhat of a transformation over the past few years. While men have always been able to indulge in the label of ‘silver fox’, for women it’s been a longer road to seeing the beauty of grey. Thankfully, any smart colourist can bring out the best in their grey clients and the most creative colourist can make that grey hair the mane attraction! Brian Leo Mccallum, owner of ROAR Hair & Beauty says that the proper at home regime is essential to keep grey hair looking it’s best. “When it comes to caring for grey hair, I recommend the Goldwell Dual Senses Silver range. It’s formulated for white and cool toned blondes and it contains an optical brightener to keep the colour clean but it won’t overtone it like a pigmented shampoo could.” Michelle Summers Davies of MD Hair in Pembrokeshire says that many of her clients come to her saying that they want a look that embraces their grey – and why 18 / THE CAPITAL CUT

not, ageing is a privilege so there’s nothing wrong with showing it off! Michelle says: “My clients are becoming more intrigued and curious to see if their grey hair suits them and I think part of that curiosity is down to the fact that embracing their greys can end up meaning less maintenance. “I do think that a proper consultation is essential for grey clients as it’s not just a case of leaving it to grow out. An application like freehand weaving, foils or alternating tones will give a better blend to the old solid colour and I’d advise you use violets, nudes, pearls or ash; depending on what tone of grey your client wants they can be adjusted with different levels and mix tones to add depth for darker greys or pastel for more of a silver finish.” Becky Sutherland, OSMO Ambassador says there are two ways for a client to go fully grey. If it’s an immediate change then it’s about removing any previous colour and then matching a grey colour to your client’s natural grey.

Salon Couture

“The second option for clients wishing to go grey is to simply grow it out. This is a far longer process but you won’t be stripping colour. Growing colour out can take a good six months, if not longer, so be sure to let your client know they will need to be in it for the long haul. While it grows out encourage them to try a few hair-up styles, wear more hats, or even consider cutting their hair shorter – this way they’ll stay on track.”

ROOT SMUDGING, A MORE NATURAL FINISH For clients who want a lived-in, low maintenance colour option, root smudging is the perfect solution. This colouring technique blends the darkness of the root into the lighter, highlighted hair, enhancing depth and dimension. Kelly Rowney of Tate Hair agrees: “a root smudge is a great way to soften regrowth and soften colouring, giving clients a seamless blend and a longer time between appointments. It also gives an amazing softening effect for clients who like to tie their hair up.” Dan Spiller of Marc Antoni says the key to the perfect root smudge is all in the colour choices: “Root smudging has become popular for clients who want to avoid harsh-looking regrowth and have a more natural blend. It’s a freehand technique that must be mastered, as we’re seeing a definite uptick in clients wanting that natural blend between root and mid sections.

Salon Couture

EMBRACE THE GREY

Becky Sutherland

Becky Sutherland

3 Advise your grey clients to keep on top of their cut and colour by putting together a hair journey for them. Revisit this plan anywhere between 2 to 6 weeks for treatments and a toner to keep the artificial tone of grey for longer by blocking out any unwanted warmth from the old colour. This will help the growing out phase while embracing the regrowth of natural grey hair. @michelledavieshair_artist

Becky says: “Try mixing a few different shades of grey for a more natural finish and a softer colour blend; this will also allow the natural root to grow out and achieve the end goal of a natural grey. Once the perfect grey base has been created, each salon visit afterwards, will take less time.

“With more and more clients spacing out more time between appointments, the root smudge is a great way for them to maintain hair at home and between salon visits. The best way to approach it is to choose a colour that’s not too far from their natural colour, while also ensuring that it’s not a million miles away from the hair colour itself. You want to ensure the blend works between the colours, mixing another if necessary to transition the colour break.” Are you all stocked up for your colour clients this season? CAPITAL / MENS

A 2021 survey by the British College of Aesthetic Medicine found that the amount of men spending on facials and other aesthetic facial procedures had increased by 70 percent, so it’s easy to see why men will be spending more than ever in 2025. This rise in activity could be a post-pandemic thing as we all had more time to spend analysing and working on our skin during that period. What that means today is that more men are looking for the same skin benefits that your 20 / THE CAPITAL CUT

female clients are after. Men are just as likely to want to see their skin looking more plump, hydrated and linefree, so it’s definitely a good time to think about offering your existing facial menu to male clients too. When you think about the basics of your facial services – cleansing, exfoliating and treating – it’s these exact same basics that would appeal to a male clientele. If

Shutterstock

FACIALS FOR ALL

you’ve yet to work on male clients, why not invite a few of the men in your life in to try your services? Think partners, dads, cousins, uncles! This way you can take some imagery to start sharing the service on your social media, and who knows, you might get a new client for life.

Jim Shaw of Toni&Guy, Billericay shares his top tips to deliver the best grooming services for your male clients.

1

The consultation is key when it comes to delivering any service in the salon, even male grooming. Whether it be a wet shave, waxing, manicures or pedicures it’s important to have a consultation with the client to ensure you know what they want to achieve and so that you can discuss any issues or concerns they have. This will also help you to build a relationship and trust with the client.

2

If you’re working on your client’s beard, ensure you clean up the shape to perfect the look. Outlining the jaw will give a stronger look and the longest part of the beard should be at the longest part of the face – the chin. Underneath the beard you will want to ensure this is tidied up and doesn’t have a lot of length, as it can make the face look fuller and is less flattering.

BROWS, NOT JUST BEARDS! We can’t quite put our finger on when it happened, but something has definitely changed in how men view their facial hair. Yes a hot towel and massage has long been part of a beard trimming service, but now men are expecting that this service is finished with a hydrating serum and a touch of nourishing beard oil too. And it’s not just beards; men’s brow services are also proving to mean big business. Just like for your female clients, brows frame the face, and men are realising that it’s pointless getting their beard and hairstyles in check if they’re leaving their brows a little too rough and rugged. Consider offering your existing brow services to male clients, specifically threading and waxing. You might even get some men inquiring about the merits of microblading or lamination, especially if they have more coarse, thick brow hairs.

3

Create a memorable experience for the client. Men like to be pampered and also want to have an enjoyable time in the salon that encourages them to come back. Think about how you can make the experience more memorable through added touches such such as hot towel treatments, refreshments, and luxurious shaving creams after their shave etc. At Toni&Guy Billericay we even have a shoe shining area and an aftershave station where men can spritz themselves upon leaving the salon.

4

With all grooming, whether it be a shave or facial treatment, always finish with the right aftercare such as aftershave balms, moisturising creams or oils. Finish the treatment/ service by chatting to your client about the products they use and inform them on what they should be using and how they will benefit.

For years it’s often been said that women spend far more than men when it comes to their hair and beauty regimes, but since 2023, according to Statista.com, men in the UK are spending much more on items such as tanning products and hydrating serums. Read on to find out the men’s grooming services you could be offering – and profiting from. It’s no longer just about a haircut.

FROM HEAD TO TOE Thanks to the likes of Ryan Reynolds as Ken in Barbie, more men than ever are after a year-round tan, and who can blame them when the UK gets so little sun! While the world of self-tanning has often been perceived as a womandominated service, according to Maximize Market Research, men now account for a quarter of the spending on self-tanners, drops and sprays. Sadly, there’s a downside to this tanning addiction; according to a 2024 survey by skin cancer charity Melanoma Focus, younger men aged 16 to 25 (despite the legal age being 18) are using tanning beds in a bid for a permanent tan, while booking in a fake tan with a beauty pro could literally save their skin in the long run. If you’re someone who already offers tanning services, 2025 could be a brilliant time for you to not only raise awareness about the risks involved with tanning beds but also get yourself a new, younger clientele in the process. There are few brands that are so iconic that we know which brand it is simply by the shade of blue it uses on its packaging, but Tiffany & Co is one such brand. What we love is the fact that, despite this brand being almost 190 years old, it’s seeing a resurgence in popularity because everyone wants that iconic Tiffany Blue on their nails. The perfect way to play with this cool blue could be adding gold leaf and embellishment or trying 3D bubble techniques. 3D TEXTURE AND NAIL ART As with all creative industries, trends are always cyclical, and when it comes to nail trends right now, we’re going back to the beginning when 3D texture was first discovered and nail art was as wild and wonderful as you like. For this season we’re seeing lots of tonal experimentation with 3D texture – which means keeping the colours you use pretty monotone while adding interest with 3D accents, just like these pretty pearly nails by Tom Bachik. What’s even better is that you can mix your 3D textures with your nail art to create out of this world bespoke sets for your clients. Just look at these gorgeous 3D looks from Anouska Anastasia. Get the look: We love Glitterbels Diamond Dust for adding some silver glitter embellishment. Also try: Mixing metallics with matte to create a luxe finish to your 3D art.

METALLIC GOLD

Gold is another trend that always comes back, although that’s usually around the festive period. However, metallic gold looks good whatever the season, and that’s down to the fact that it just oozes expensive. For this kind of glam, long nails and extensions are the best way to really make the most of gold; check out these stunners by Tom Bachik! Get the look: We love The Manicure Company’s Nail Shadow Palette in Gold. Also try: As well as gold there are plenty of other metallics to play with, including bronze, copper, silver and chrome pastels. 24 / THE CAPITAL CUT

CREATIVE FRENCHIES

Let’s get one thing straight; the French manicure isn’t going anywhere! But, what’s great about knowing the classics, is that once you know how to master them, you can also manipulate and refresh them. As such, every single season we get to see a new take on this timeless look – and right now, it’s all about adding your own boost of creativity. We’re talking mix and match shades that are so far removed from the OG neutral base and white tip combo. We’re talking gold tips, micro French tips, chevron tip – the world is your oyster. Get the look: We love a tonal French Mani, so why not try pink with a red tip? We like OPI’s Flamingo Your Own Way tipped with their Thrillifying from the Wicked range.

@nailartbyqueenie

Also try: Sticking with a neutral base but creating a black or red chevron tip?

SHORT AND SWEET

Short squoval nails and square shapes are always a popular go-to for clients who prefer a minimalist take on chic nail art, and they’re definitely here to stay.

@nailsbydiem

A great option for clients who need to follow specific nail guidelines when it comes to their career is the Russian manicure; it’s all about precision and durability, and is perfect when working with single colours. Think rich shades of cherry red, deep chocolate brown, dark navy, inky black and divine burgundy and remember a clean finish is key. This look might seem simple but the key is to give the client an utterly flawless finish.

First, you’ll need to exfoliate the skin to avoid any dry patches and dullness. How you approach exfoliating will depend on your clients’ skin – some might benefit from Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) to replenish moisture levels and exfoliate dead skin, while others could prefer gentle manual exfoliation using a cleansing balm and a soft cloth.

But today, thanks to the swift innovation that the K-beauty industry is known for, we’re able to get that same finish, while using less products. Add this to the fact that, since the pandemic, consumers have become much more savvy about ingredients and what they can use to achieve glowing skin and we’ve reached a new stage of glass skin. One that was really epitomised by a singular moment in beauty history – when iconic makeup artist Pat McGrath created porcelain skin for the Maison Margiela by John Galliano Artisanal fashion show in January last year.

That doll-like skin finish sent the internet wild, as publications and even people who had no interest in skincare prior to this moment, wanted to know how Queen Pat had achieved the ultimate glass skin.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Glass skin, or super dewy skin, is a trend that really began with Korean skincare. When K-beauty first started being discussed in the West, around 2014, the emphasis was often on multiple products and 10-step routines, all aimed at creating skin that literally glowed from within, with an almost glassy finish.

IF YOU’RE A BEAUTY THERAPIST, then it’s all down to how you treat your clients during their facial service. While you might not be applying makeup to them afterwards, you can absolutely give them the hydrated base they will need to carry off siren skin.

The trend first emerged at London Fashion Week during the SS25 shows. One that really showed off the look was the Dreaming Eli show. Backstage makeup artists for MAC Cosmetics were led by Senior Artist Carly Utting in creating what she called ‘siren skin’ with an opalescent finish. To get that shimmering skin Carly shared that it was all about creating a skincare/makeup hybrid. Which makes sense, because one thing about shimmering skin, is that the skin beneath the shimmer must be thoroughly, intensely hydrated, because a hydrated surface means a more reflective finish. For instance, applying a shimmering eyeshadow or blush to skin that hasn’t been moisturised can often result in the shimmer or pigment being patchy and actually showing just how textured the skin is. The key to siren skin is, once the face and body is moisturised, then a shimmering face and body foundation can be applied on top. This means as well as actual hydration, there is a shimmer added to increase the look of hydrated skin.

Next, focus on products that contain ingredients that attract hydration and also seal it into the skin. A serum that contains Hyaluronic Acid should be used next, most importantly on damp skin. That way you’re already working on retaining that moisture. Next, use a moisturiser that’s packed with Ceramides; they help soften the skin, repair the skin barrier and also prevent moisture from escaping.

IF YOU’RE A MAKEUP ARTIST then you’ll need to do all of the above first, and then focus on your clients’ base. A great way to start building that siren skin finish is to mix your preferred liquid highlighter into your clients’ foundation. Once you’ve applied the base where needed, you can begin to focus on the high points of the face. Areas such as the brow bone, the bridge of the nose, cheekbones and even the jawline can be highlighted with cream highlighters or finely milled powder highlighters. The trick is to work carefully and slowly – and the smaller the brush, the more you’ll be able to really pinpoint that highlighter for the most ethereal glow. Charisse Kenion

6 TIPS FOR THINNING BROWS

Brow powder is a fabulous quick fix solution if your clients’ brows are naturally gappy and need filling in, or if they have scars where the hair refuses to regrow. It’s also good for extending a short brow or enhancing the arch. Available in many shades, you can be as creative as you like, using one colour or more, creating a block brow or ombre look. Mineral powders have great staying power with quality pigments that need no touching up throughout the day, and a little goes a long way, meaning they last and last!

the hair shaft and the colour is locked in, lasting anything from 4-6 weeks; they come in a variety of colours and shades that can be mixed to achieve the perfect colour for your client. This type of tint – when applied to the skin – only stains the skin for a short amount of time. Patch testing for this tint is crucial as the ingredients are known allergens.

While ultra-thin brows might be all the rage on celebrities like Doja Cat as well as on the catwalk, for some women thin brows are anything but a beauty statement. In fact, for many of your clients, thinning brows could be something that makes them feel less than beautiful, for a variety of reasons, from autoimmune disease, overplucking or uncontrolled habitual pulling known as Trichotillomania. Here Ruth Atkins, Salon System Educator shares her 6 tips for thinning brows. 30 / THE CAPITAL CUT

1 GROWTH SERUMS

Most of the eyebrow serums in the UK market are focused on strengthening and conditioning and feature ingredients such as Castor Oil, Keratin or Peptides/Amino Acids, which act like a hair conditioner to add plumpness, gloss, and strength to brow hairs already in existence. Serums need to be used regularly and if your client sticks with it, they should see signs of improvements within a few months - it’s not an overnight thing.

2

TIME TO TINT

Tinting brows is a great way to help the brows appear fuller and thicker, and there are two types of tints available in-salon. First, there’s the oxidised tint – which consists of a tube of colour that’s mixed with hydrogen peroxide, applied to the brows and left for up to 15-20 minutes to process. This type of tint enters

The other option is a nonoxidised tint like Salon System Marvelbrow Tint – which is peroxide and PPD-free - PPD can cause allergic reactions so this is a much better option for clients with sensitive skin and those who have reacted to an oxidised patch test. This option is also much better at staining the skin and lasts much longer – between 5-7 days on the skin and up to four weeks on the hair. This type of tint is a 2-step application; first the tint (a colourless gel) is applied and allowed to absorb into the hair and skin. Next the developer gel – a silver nitrate solution that’s also colourless – is applied on top, in small sections at a time. When the silver nitrate solution touches the tinted area, a chemical reaction occurs, resulting in a stain of either black or brown depending on the colour used. The only downside with this tint is that, because it’s completely plant-based, you’re more restricted on colour options.

4

LET IT GROW

If your clients thinning brows are down to overtweezing it’s time to tell them that the only time they need to get their tweezers out is if they happen to get a splinter – no other reason! If they are coming to you to have their brows professionally treated, then they will only undo all your work and waste their money. Let your client know that the journey to thicker, fuller brows is a longterm commitment and to leave their brows alone until their next appointment – however tempting it might be.

3 THE POWER OF POWDER

TO 5 LOOK LAMINATE

Brow laminations like the RefectoCil Brow Lamination Kit and Salon System Lash & Brow Lift System are brilliant options for clients with thin or unruly brows. Lamination can give them full fluffy brows within a short period of time and the only maintenance needed is just a daily brush and setting. This relaxing treatment begins with the brows being cleansed before going through a chemical process where the therapist ‘sets’ the brows in place – manoeuvring each hair to give maximum coverage. This will last up to 4 weeks and a conditioning serum should be applied daily.

6 SEMI-PERMANENT SOLUTIONS

Semi-permanent brows are a serious contender for clients who want a time-saving option. Techniques have become more sophisticated and skilled brow technicians are master artists. It’s important to find the right technician because this is an unregulated industry in the UK. If this is something you don’t offer but your client wants to try it, encourage them to do their homework first.

AND REMEMBER…

Brows are such an important part of the face. They frame the eyes, balance out proportions and can even make your clients look younger – more awake – if you get them right. Ultimately, be confident with your expertise, ensure you give an excellent consultation, and work with your client to create a workable thinning brow growth programme together. TIME TO R E L AX

Emily Ciardiello, CEO and Founder of Foil Me For me it’s the little things, like taking 5-10 minutes out of the day to slow down. Whether you use that time to journal, meditate, do some breath work or simply soak up some Vitamin D – it’s a great time to tune into how you’re feeling and make the conscious decision to work through those emotions so that you’re not taking them back into the workplace. A hugely important thing to try when you work in such a busy industry is to never, ever feel guilty about saying no! Be realistic about what you can give people at certain times – both professionally and personally – yet still assure them that they are important to you. A simple phrase such as ‘I can’t give this the energy it deserves right now’ is actually a positive reinforcement without shutting down the other person.

Finally, give yourself permission to switch off and do nothing - even if it’s just for 10 minutes, it can seriously be a great reboot for your mind and body.

Last year top trend forecasting firm WGSN circulated a report on how brands can prepare for The Great Exhaustion. Set to arrive in 2026 it’s predicted that all of us – including you and your clients – will be feeling exhausted and anxious, a kind of hangover from the pandemic, AI, the cost of living crisis and other global issues. As well as getting ready for your clients wanting more from their time with you, it’s time for you to really get serious about finding moments of calm and joy in your day. Here’s how five industry professionals are getting ready.

Laura Leigh Kerr, Academy Director, Rainbow Room One thing I always encourage my team to do is take their annual leave – everyone needs a break once in a while and it is essential that you take time away from work to rest and recharge. Burnout is very much a common thing nowadays as people work incredibly hard to achieve their goals and continually evolve. At the beginning of every year, plan ahead and get those holidays booked in; it’s something for your team members to work towards and to look forward to. 34 / THE CAPITAL CUT

Brian Leo McCallum, Owner of ROAR Hair & Beauty Group Taking time out is just as important as putting time into your career, and is essential to prevent burning out. We are all guilty of working incredibly hard – of course you do when you want to be the best and give your team and clients the most amazing opportunities! But the reality is, we all need a rest. During working hours, ample breaks are a must. Take yourself away from the floor – go for a walk, get some fresh air, watch a podcast or just generally disconnect. You need time for your mind to breathe and it’s key you do this to ensure your creativity and focus has time to recharge.

Oliver Tobin, Operations Director, RUSH Hair One of the biggest things anyone can do is take a break from their phone – this is number one and something that we will see many people do over the next 12-18 months. Although technology aids our workplace in so many ways, it’s often also a hindrance, as we have become overly accessible – making switching off much more difficult. Factor in time away from your phone and put it in another room or out from reach when you get home – this simple task can really make a difference.

Louis Byrne for L’Oréal Professionnel With our industry evolving rapidly, fostering a culture of positivity, wellbeing, and growth for 2025 is more important than ever. When people ask why this matters, my answer is clear: it all begins with the individual. Leading by example from the top down empowers everyone in the organisation. Whether you’re a business owner, salon manager, stylist, technician, or assistant, we’re all in a consumer-facing role. I truly believe we attract the energy we project into our workplaces and the world. Salon owners have an incredible opportunity to offer practical tools and solutions that genuinely support their teams and clients. Imagine giving your team an unforgettable experience - a chance to reset, refresh, and rejuvenate.
