Tourists almost killed by blaze A YOUNG couple visiting Cape York for the first time say they are lucky to be alive after they were caught in a bushfire on the Old Telegraph Track last week. Victorians Sam Bakker and Jake Gretten had
to be medivacced to Cairns by the RFDS after experience burns to their legs, arms and faces. “I thought we were going to die. In my mind, I had accepted that we would die there,” Sam told Cape York Weekly.
“The fire came out of nowhere.” They are now back home and have praised the hospitality of Cape York residents and fellow travellers. Read the full story on Page 5
