MAJOR DELAY TO BRIDGE PROJECT

A MAJOR miscalculation has put the Archer River bridge project back a year and there are fears that Cape residents could face at least two more wet seasons without it. What’s worse, there is also some concern that unfinished civil

works on the roads around the Archer River Roadhouse could cut off motorists for months when the rain arrives. Works on a 2.8km sealing project were supposed to be finished by now, but are not even close to completion. With the wet season fast ap-

proaching, locals are fearful that they won’t have a road to drive on when they get past the Archer. “Even if you get across the causeway, you’re going to have to drive through a boghole as the new road won’t be finished this year,” one of the site workers told Cape York Weekly on Saturday.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads, which is overseeing the Archer River project, admitted there were issues at the site. While not providing any detail, the state government body said the proposed 230-metre bridge was now being re-designed. Full story – Pages 4 and 5
