THE 21st Weipa Rodeo entertained a crowd of thousands – and managed to raise a whopping $13,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service mental health program, as well as $10,000 to back a range of other community endeavours. Weipa Rodeo Association organisers were thrilled to see so many enjoy the show and grateful for the community’s enduring support. BIRD FLU BATTLE
The Federal Government is working to bolster the Far North’s defences against the devastating H5 bird flu strain spreading across the country. Efforts are focused on safeguarding key seabird nesting sites on islands off Cape York amid warnings the outbreak of the disease is due to worsen. Environment Minister Murray Watt says the outbreak in Australia “is likely to get much worse and our government and the experts have been very frank about that”. Read more on page 3.
