A
s I look back on the 2024 to 2025 school year, my fifth as Head of School, it was a year full of celebration. Let’s start at the end of the year and work backwards. We commemorated the Class of 2025, with 55 graduates admitted to more than 110 different colleges and universities. These incredible students achieved an impressive 59 percent acceptance rate, won numerous national academic awards, and earned nearly $1.6 million in merit scholarships. They were outstanding leaders in our school community. With input from all stakeholders, the CFA leadership unveiled the new Campus Master Plan. This roadmap aligns our facilities with CFA’s mission and long-term goals. In the year ahead, we will focus on construction designs and fundraising strategies to bring a key portion of the plan to life: Phase 1, which includes a new Middle School wing on Cameron Hall and expansions to Penton Dining Hall, McNeill Fine Arts Center, and the Athletic Center. There will be ample opportunity for everyone who loves CFA to contribute ideas, energy, and resources. Trustees, parents, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends of CFA gave generously this year. In addition to Annual Fund giving, which raised more than $430,000, we received a single gift that covered the full cost of the Campus Master Plan, and we raised another $116,667 at the Buoy Bash Auction. Generous support like this will be crucial as CFA works to maintain its reputation for academic excellence while embarking on an unprecedented level of development across all areas of campus. Thank you! Throughout the year, Hurricanes celebrated achievements in academics, the arts, and athletics, garnering national recognition from the College Board, as well as honors in regional and state competitions. Students and teachers in Grades 7 and 8 moved into their new digs in the temporary Middle School Annex, earning rave reviews from students and staff alike! Fortunately, the eight classrooms in the Middle School Annex provide ample space for our exceptional faculty to deliver CFA’s time-tested academic program to our eager students. During Homecoming Weekend, we rolled out our new House System, assigning every student and employee to one of eight unique “houses.” This initiative provides a community-building structure that fosters leadership, inclusivity, and school spirit among students, faculty, and staff. We began the year with a record enrollment of 789 students, an increase of 21 percent over pre-pandemic levels. With the commitment of our brilliant teachers, the spirit of our amazing students, the encouragement of our generous parents and friends, and the thoughtful leadership of our devoted trustees, I am confident that the future is bright at Cape Fear Academy. How students benefit from your support. LOWER SCHOOL: Greenhouse Program
E
ach year, Cape Fear Academy’s Little Explorers, our pre-Kindergarten students, host an outdoor Farmers’ Market at the campus Greenhouse to showcase goods they have made or grown. The market features student presentations and songs, followed by family shopping for student-made items like artwork, seed packets, and homemade products. The event concludes with lemonade and snacks, celebrating the students’ learning and providing a fun, hands-on experience for the community.

GREENHOUSE: Farmers Market
This year, CFA planted herbs and leafy greens in the water towers. Middle School students recreated the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan to accompany their study of MesoAmerican history and also planted chinampas, or floating gardens. In addition, we planted raised beds with tomatoes, potatoes, herbs, and plenty of sunflowers, and propagated oleander bushes and fig trees.

ATHLETICS:
New Gymnasium Floors
I
n the summer of 2024, Cape Fear Academy refinished and repainted our main gym floor and installed new LED lights in both the main gym and Cameron Gym. These upgrades have greatly improved our athletic program and our school by increasing energy efficiency, enhancing safety for our athletes, and providing a better viewing experience for our fans. The new additions have created a brighter, more inviting atmosphere that adds to the overall image and appeal of one of the best gyms in New Hanover County and in the NCISAA.

ollege planning courses, or CPC, is an essential part of learning the ways of the college application process. Students throughout each grade of High School are
educated on important qualities that colleges look for in ideal applicants. College counselors Leigh Ann Hodges and Bethany
Fee teach students about necessary aspects of college such as cost, major, or location, and help to find what is right for each student. “The college counselors were helpful when considering what colleges I thought about applying to, and were there for me every step of the way,” Lane Durham ‘24 said. College preparatory classes occur four to six times each year for each grade in High School. “Mrs. Hodges and Mrs. Fee go through slide shows that are informative to me and explain anything that I don’t fully understand,” Alex Zakszeski ‘26 said. The college counselors also have one on one meetings with Juniors and Seniors in which they cover the documents that need to be met in order to figure out a college plan. Students find this beneficial because they receive feedback that is specifically catered to them while also getting support from their counselors and parents. “Having a meeting with my college counselor helped me get an idea of ideal colleges regarding my test scores and transcript,” Owen Cannon ‘25 said. * As featured in the CFA 2025 yearbook.

Eleven wonderful years at Cape Fear Academy have left a lasting impact on me, contributing to my growth as a scholar, individual, and friend. During my time here, I’ve learned many valuable lessons about dedication and drive, but none have been as useful as those that have taught me how to collaborate with others. While I have many exciting memories at CFA, my favorite is this year’s Homecoming Pep Rally in which the senior class had to join together to coordinate fun activities and decorate cars for the parade. Watching everyone help one another to achieve a common goal is truly inspiring, and I enjoyed every minute spent with my classmates with whom I have formed stronger bonds with because of this school event.

Being at Cape Fear Academy has given me countless opportunities to grow and thrive. I’ve found communities here that I have truly embraced, and I appreciate the supportive environment garnered by other CFA students. Specifically, being a stage manager for our theater department has simultaneously given me chances for leadership and garnered unforgettable experiences. One of my favorite memories at CFA is opening night for my junior year musical, Mamma Mia. The energy that night from both my company and our audience was completely electric, and being able to perform a show that everyone had been working on for months is such a gratifying feeling. As a stage manager with two of my best friends, we were able to help direct a memorable performance for both our company and our audience.
Cape Fear Academy gave me the encouragement and support to step out of my comfort zone in ways I’d never imagined. In my first week as a freshman at a new high school where I knew next to no one, I attended a community reading event where I got to discuss a book, Think Again by Adam Grant, with parents, students, and teachers who had also read it. Afterward, the head of school at the time approached me and encouraged me to join the debate team, a suggestion that changed my entire high school experience for the better. I found the team, joined, and eventually became both a coach and captain in my junior and senior years. Without that initial encouragement, I never would have discovered my passion for public speaking and researching different aspects of the human experience. I realize how much Cape Fear’s supportive and enriching environment shaped my journey. Freshman me would never believe all that I’ve been able to achieve, but CFA made it a reality.

I
’m new to Cape Fear Academy. Actually, I’m new to independent schools. In my public school, if we needed something for the classroom, I had to borrow from a colleague, take something from a storage room, or sometimes, purchase an item with my own money. This summer, an email invited me to select furniture for our new classroom in the Annex. There were choices of tables, chairs, desks and bookshelves. Get that? Choices! None of it came out of my pocket, and all of it arrived in a timely manner to establish a comfortable learning environment for students from day one. Thank you, contributors to CFA’s annual fund, for making this happen. Our maintenance staff did a great job readying the Annex for students. We had projectors mounted from the ceilings, and they moved screens and bulletin boards to accommodate our room-byroom preferences. We’re having a good experience in the Annex. We have restrooms, water, a copier and a printer -- In other words, everything we need! You know what I’m enjoying particularly? Carpet. It warms the room, literally and figuratively, and allows me to occasionally gather the class in a group on the floor for a family meeting. As a teacher new to CFA, I’m grateful to share this space with seven other teachers. Our close proximity allows us to build relationships like we are our own collegial cohort. I feel welcome and supported well at CFA.
Carla Whitwell attended the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) National Conference in Nashville. Bill Kanzinger and Todd Jones presented at the NCAIS Conference. Kate Woodard attended both the North Carolina Science Teachers Association Conference and the National Science Teaching Association Conference in Philadelphia. Becca Scott attended the National Association of Biology Teachers Conference in St. Louis and the National Science Teaching Association Conference in Philadelphia. Kelly Kennedy completed multiple professional development sessions to enhance Middle School Spanish instruction. Johnna Lattin completed extensive professional development in artificial intelligence for schools.

e were absolutely thrilled to welcome over 250 guests to this year’s unforgettable Buoy Bash! The evening was a fantastic celebration that brought together current CFA families, alumni, and enthusiastic supporters. It was a night filled with delicious food, laughter, waterfront views, and incredible school spirit. Hosted at the stunning MarineMax Wrightsville Beach, guests enjoyed great company and generously bid on more than 60 incredible auction items, all graciously donated by friends and families of Cape Fear Academy. Thanks to the tremendous support of our community, we raised an impressive $116,667 to benefit CFA and our Family Partnership program. It was a night to remember, and we couldn’t have done it without our amazing host, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and our auction committee.
