Quiet meeting at Tobyhanna Township by Ruth Isenberg
It’s that wonderful time of year when sunflowers bloom. These beautiful flowers have a short growing season. This field is part of Brown Hill Farms at 405 Avery Station Road, Tunkhannock (not Tunkhannock Township, but about an hour north) is open through the end of August for the sunflower season. Due to a dry May and June only 30% of sunflowers have bloomed so the flowering displays may continue a few extra weeks this year. There’s still time to stop and enjoy the sunflowers, at sunflower farms like this one, or growing in private gardens around the area. Lori R. Cooper
A quick and quiet Tobyhanna Township Supervisors meeting took place on Monday, August 21. Supervisors announced that executive sessions had been held for legal and personnel issues. They conducted routine business, including ratification of bills and acceptance of reports. Joe Crandall was appointed to the expiring Zoning Hearing Board seat; he had been serving by appointment and submitted a letter of interest in continuing in the post. Supervisors renewed the contract with Penn Strategies for another year at a rate of $4,000 per month. President Jason Fitzgerald told the board they had not raised their rate to the township this year, noting that they were one of the firm’a first clients, and one they enjoyed working with. Supervisors in return praised the firm for the number and variety of grants they have obtained for the township. Budget worksessions will take place September 26, October 10 and October 24. The financial audit report for 2022 was accepted, along with the Zelenkofske Axelrod audit of the fire department. A public hearing will be advertised for an ordinance to vacate the now unused portion of Hudock Road, and
to accept St. Luke’s Road and the Hudock Road cul-de-sac as township roads. A second hearing will be held to consider a general obligation note for the township.
With no public comment, the meeting lasted barely half an hour. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, at 6 p.m.
