BRUSH FIRES kept local fire departments busy the last few weeks, as hot temperatures and dry and windy weather combined to create the perfect conditions for fires to spread rapidly. The area above, along Route 940 near Harmony Beverage, was on fire and creating smoky conditions at the same time that over 4,300 acres burned near White Haven, and part of the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike was temporarily closed because of poor visibility. Recent rains have helped, and burn bans in Tobyhanna and Coolbaugh Township had been cancelled as of press time, though Tunkhannock Township’s was still on. JP: Nicole Getz
