Dog owners: Get a leash – and use it “That’s all I can stands, cuz I can’t stands n’more!” The immortal words of Popeye. Whatever his beef was, I think I know how he must’ve felt. Tom My beef is with cerZYTARUK tain numerous big dog owners who insist on letting Rex run free in public parks despite bylaws signs clearly stating their dog must be on a leash. Responsible dog owners, please take note: my quarrel is not with you. It’s with people like the clown my family had the misfortune to cross paths with in Redwood Park on Sunday. This guy’s big black dog came charging right up to one of my boys, who had been quietly minding his own business, and began snarling and growling at him. “Isn’t that thing supposed to be on a leash?” I remarked, when the owner finally caught up. “Oh, he’s OK.” After parting ways, the guy shot back, as an afterthought, “What do you mean, shouldn’t that thing be on a leash?” I responded that bylaw signs posted at the park’s entrance clearly state it’s not an off-leash park and dogs must be leashed. “No he doesn’t,” he replied. “Maybe your kids should be on a leash.” It got uglier from there.

The Stanley Cup is coming to Surrey and North Delta this week in the hands of local NHLers Colin Fraser and Troy Brouwer. Community celebrations are planned for Wednesday (July 14) in North Surrey and Thursday (July 15) in North Delta. Fraser, of Surrey, and Brouwer, of North Delta, won hockey’s most coveted trophy last month as members of the Chicago Blackhawks. Fraser will bring the big silver mug to Central City Plaza from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday for a community event, to include a barbecue hosted by North Surrey Lions Club, free family activities, street hockey games and photo opportunities with the cup, at 13450 102nd Ave. On Thursday starting at around 1 p.m., Brouwer will ride with the Stanley Cup aboard a Zamboni ice-cleaning machine on a parade route from North Delta’s public safety building to Sungod arena, along 84th Avenue and 112th Street. At Sungod, where his framed jersey hangs on a wall, Brouwer will pose for photos with the cup at a private event limited to North Delta Minor Hockey players and their families. As a kid, Fraser was a member of Surrey Minor Hockey Association and played the game at North Surrey Arena. He was recently traded by the Blackhawks to Edmonton Oilers.

Although Edward Poore, left, and Kirk Sabre walk down the street in Surrey holding hands, Sabre keeps an eye out for trouble: “I can’t run very fast.”
