CONFERENCE
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HAS A NEW ENEMY Surrey coalition shines spotlight on ugliness and relatively low profile of domestic abuse Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter
SURREY – A city councillor has made ending domestic violence in Surrey her pet project. Barinder Rasode was elected in 2008 and the following year she helped organize the first conference of Surrey-based social agencies engaged in either combating domestic abuse, or helping its victims. “What became apparent was that there were a lot of people here working on domestic violence. These agencies were doing a lot of good work, but there was a lack of co-ordination,” Rasode said. She set herself the task of creating the coordination needed to make everyone’s efforts more effective. Her plan was to bring all of the agencies involved together in one room to create a foundation for co-operation. That was in 2009. This year’s conference was held Wednesday under the auspices of the Surrey Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, a subcommittee formed to guide the process.
