Terry Fox Run

They cry together. They run together.

They survive together. “It’s like we both have a need to protect each other from what we can’t protect each other from.” – Kimberly Sparling, about mom Lynn.

L

ynn Sparling and her daughter Kimberly share a unique mother-daughter bond that has been shaped by tragedy and triumph.

Both women are cancer survivors. The two women sat down with the Now recently at Lynn’s home to share their story and help promote the Terry Fox Run set for Sept. 19. “I’m passionate about making a difference and helping to make Terry’s dreams come true,” Kimberly says.

Kimberly, now 24, was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, the same type of bone cancer as Terry Fox, at the age of 18. She was playing softball when she fell trying to catch a fly ball. At first the injury was dismissed as a pulled muscle but the pain persisted and a few

weeks later her mother noticed “a golf ball-sized” lump protruding from her daughter’s right leg. She was sent to Langley Memorial Hospital for X-rays, and began to suspect that something was amiss.
