Keeling quits at Fraser Downs

Tom ZILLICH Staff Reporter

SURREY – Hanging upside down for nearly 13 minutes sounds daunting enough, but try juggling while dangling there. It’s something Quinn Spicker managed to do during a successful Guinness world-record attempt last week. Tied by his feet to a circus trapeze, the Surrey teen juggled upside down for exactly 12 minutes and 50 seconds, smashing the previous mark of five minutes, 45 seconds. The spectacle was witnessed July 22 at the PNE Garden auditorium, where Spicker has trained with the CircusWest circus crew for the past few years. “I’m happy,” he told the Now. “I’m really not sure what practical benefits of having a world record are, but it’s cool.” Spicker, 18, is a champion juggler who learned the trick by studying tips on the internet. Standing upright, he can juggle up to eight balls at once. (For a closer look at the guy in action, search “Quinn Spicker” on youtube.com and click on “juggling 6 and 7 balls.”)

SURREY – Chuck Keeling has resigned as vice president, racing operations and general manager of Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. Keeling joined Great Canadian in 2005, when the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation completed its purchase of Orangeville Raceway Limited, which operated both Sandown Raceway on Vancouver Island and Fraser Downs in Cloverdale. Keeling, whose grandfather Jim Keeling senior helped open Cloverdale Raceway in 1976, had successfully managed and coowned Orangeville since 1996. Keeling was named Business Person of the Year by the Surrey Board of Trade in 2009. – The Now

RANDY ATWAL

SURREY – Randy Atwal feels good about being able to now live mortgage-free — but the fuel bill for his fellow commuters is another matter. The Newton resident, 36, won

$1 million in last Friday’s Lotto Max draw. He bought the “quick pick” ticket at a newsstand in downtown Vancouver, where he works as a financial analyst for the feds. He might be in for a rough ride from his daily carpooling crew. “They’re going to tease me for

sure,” Atwal said Thursday. “I’ll probably have to buy all the gas now.” The odds of his Maxmillion lotto win were one in 28.6 million, with seven of seven numbers matched. Atwal, married and the father of two young kids, checked his ticket Wednesday, several days after the draw.

“We’re pretty calm about it, just taking it day by day,” he told the Now. “We don’t have plans (for the winnings) yet, just pay off debt. Nothing spectacular planned.” Today’s Lotto Max jackpot (Friday) is $50 million, plus an estimated 29 Maxmillion prizes of $1 million each.
