DON’T SQUISH IT! A little beetle with a big name – Audouin’s Night-stalking Tiger Beetle (how cool is that?) – is an endangered species in B.C. with fragile populations living in South Surrey and White Rock. The beetle lives under forest debris by day and emerges at night to hunt. Jennifer Heron, an invertibrate specialist: “They’re just cool bugs who like to hang out and eat other bugs.”

After five days on the waters off the Lower Mainland, averaging about 23 kilometres a day and travelling through five traditional territories, the paddlers on the 2010 Pulling Together Canoe Journey hit the beach in White Rock Thursday morning, before moving on to Crescent Beach, their final destination, where they were expected to arrive at about 4 p.m. Today, the paddlers

– about 350 people from across B.C. – will celebrate their journey at Semiahmoo with traditional ceremonies, including dancing, drumming and singing, plus the passing of the paddle for next year’s journey. The celebration marks the first time in 50 years that canoes have come into Semiahmoo. The ‘Now’ will be there – look for full coverage online and in Tuesday’s issue.
