Sun bathing urged New homes built to accommodate solar-powered hot water systems
BY A LAN CAMPBELL

New single-family homes in Richmond may soon have to be built to accommodate a solar-powered hot water system. The B.C. government is preparing to introduce regulations that will require the municipalities who opt into the new rules to ensure that single dwelling units are solar hot water ready. The City of Richmond had not opted in before the original June 1 deadline, but the province has since extended the cut off date to Aug. 1 and city staff are now recommending Richmond be involved. Any new regulations — which would require infrastructure to be put in place by the builder during construction — are aimed at reducing the use of non-renewable energy sources and thus reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions.
The city’s acting director of building approvals, Gavin Woo, said in his report, set to go before Tuesday’s city council planning committee, that, “solar hot water systems will be undergoing widespread adoption in the coming years in the form of … roof mounted systems designed to heat the dwelling’s water.” In order to accommodate the future installation of a solar heating system, the roof would have to be designed to cope with the additional weight. Woo added that having the design in place at the construction stage will allow the homeowner to easily install the piping and cabling to connect to the solar panels on the roof. Also, having the building designed to slip a solar hot water system in will dramatically reduce the cost of installing such a system, with additional costs — if see Builders page 5
