CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

A time to remember ... Steveston-London secondary presents a Remembrance Day play, Known Only to God. The play speculates as to the identity of Canada’s Unknown Soldier. It was written by the school’s drama teacher, Jean Kosar, and will be performed by drama club students. Performances of Known Only to God happen Monday, Nov. 8 and Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the school theatre at 6600 Williams Rd. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students and teachers. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 604-668-6668.

Richmond Liberal MLA Rob Howard is an unabashed admirer of Premier Gordon Campbell, who announced his resignation Wednesday. Howard cited Campbell’s leadership as one of the reasons he entered politics in the first place. Richmond, in particular, benefited under the Campbell government, Howard added. “The Canada Line would not have happened without the premier,” Howard said. “You could make some arguments that, without the premier’s leadership, the Olympics wouldn’t have happened.” Greg Halsey-Brandt, who served one term under Campbell before returning to municipal politics, was on Interstate Highway 5, just south of San Francisco, on his way to Mexico with wife Evelina when they started getting text messages and emails with the news. He wasn’t all that surprised by the announcement. After going on the air with a last-ditch attempt to win British Columbians back with an income tax cut, and not getting the bounce he had hoped for, Campbell realized it was time to go, HalseyBrandt said. “We have a convention coming up in two see MP page 4

Gottschalk appalled at son’s killers’ sentence When someone is murdered, there is often at least some feeling of closure when the killer is sentenced. Ramona Gottschalk says she feels no such sense of resolution — and no sense of justice being served — following the sentencing Wednesday of the two young men who killed her son, Cody. “The door is closed, but there is no closure,” Gottschalk $

‘The door is closed, but there is no closure’ told the News. “One of Cody’s friend’s said that, and I couldn’t have said it better myself.” Cody Gottschalk, 19, was stabbed five times in a fight with Adam Derek Phillips, 21, and Justin Wayne Lennard, 22, whom Justice Terence Schultes described as “thuggish” during Wednesday’s sentencing in Chilliwack. Phillips, who admitted to

stabbing the popular McMath secondary grad, received an eight-year sentence. But because the stabbing happened before a two-for-one credit for pretrial time served was scrapped, Phillips was credited with four years for the two he has already served. The result is that he will serve three more years in jail. Lennard, meanwhile, who started the fight, received two

years in jail, in addition to the two years he already served. But they are eligible to apply for early parole after serving twothirds of their sentence. “I just can’t believe it,” Gottschalk said. “Justice has not been served, nor is society being protected. These guys will be walking in months, while I’ll never see my son again.” see Miskiw page 4
