Taxi driver denied permit ‘Wrong crowd’ blamed for young man’s spotty record BY ALAN CAMPBELL

CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

Bird’s eye view ... Kelsey Holkestad, a student from McGill University, got a summer job with the Steveston Harbour Authority beautifying the wharves with a splash of colour. The pigeon is her supervisor, it just stands there and stares. (Not like that’s a comment on supervisors.)

CRIME

Man arrested at YVR with child porn

A young taxi driver failed in his bizarre plea to Richmond city council to overturn a police denial of his permit. Hussain Chaudhry, 24, was refused a new chauffeur’s permit by the RCMP due to clocking up a series of driving infractions, including driving without a seatbelt, running a yellow light and two 24-hour alcohol bans within a couple of years of each other. But Chaudhry — first through a family friend and then in his own words — appealed to council and implored with them for more than an hour to grant his permit as it’s the only way he can earn enough money to go back to college and finish his marketing course. “He was born in Pakistan and when he came here he got into the wrong crowd,” said the friend of Chaudhry’s family, six of whom were at city hall to support him. see Halsey-Brandt page 4

Images of child sexual abuse found on laptop belonging to traveller from Denver An American traveller has been arrested for allegedly possessing child pornography in his laptop computer. The man — 21-year-old Denver resident John Francis Scott — was arrested at YVR on Tuesday after Canada Border Services Agency officers inspected his computer. Child sexual abuse images and videos depicting the

sexual abuse of children were located on a laptop examined by the CBSA during secondary screening of passengers entering Canada. Scott, who had flown into Vancouver from Denver that day, was taken into custody by police, before appearing Wednesday at Richmond Provincial Court. Scott has been charged with possession of child pornography and he remains in custody pending bail with his next court

appearance set for August 26. Richmond RCMP said that a preliminary investigation has indicated that Scott was travelling from Denver to Vancouver, however no explanation was provided by Scott as far as the purpose of his trip. Past cases, according to the RCMP, have identified that U.S. citizens do travel to Canada for the sole purpose of sexually exploiting children. “Child pornography is child abuse, plain and simple,”

said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Sherrdean Turley. “These incidents are taken very seriously and every effort is made at bringing these sexual predators to justice.” Richmond RCMP is asking that anyone who knows of a child at risk or who knows someone who might pose a risk to children to contact your local police or if you wish to remain anonymous, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
