Warning: Protect your pets Police investigate after two cats doused with paint thinner BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
New Westminster’s animal control service is urging residents to be vigilant in protecting their cats after a disturbing report about possible animal abuse. A resident contacted the city Monday to report an incident that occurred in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood on Friday, July 2. “Her cat came running home, crying. It was saturated – they believe it was paint thinner,” said Nancy Millar, animal services officer. “His front legs and head were dry. It was like someone had picked him up and dipped him.” The resident had just noticed a neighbour’s cat was sitting on its patio. The cat was also soaking wet, but its owners weren’t home at the time. “When she picked up her cat, it reeked of what they believe was paint thinner,” Millar said. “She was able to bathe it.” The other cat, however, was stuck on the patio and the liquid is believed to have been absorbed into its body. It is now being cared for by a veterinarian and isn’t doing well. The cats belong to people living in the 1000 block of Queens Avenue. A file has been opened with New Westminster Police Service. Anyone with information is asked to call 604-525-5411. “We want people to be vigilant and keep an eye on their pets,” Millar said. “If anyone knows of anything, please contact New Westminster police.”

resident Vance McFadyen, who nominated the city in the contest. “The key thing for us on July 23 is to vote and vote often. That is the key thing we want to get out.” McFadyen heard about the contest and decided to see if the city could earn funds for the youth centre that’s now under construction in Moody Park. “I am still in a bit of shock,” he said about writing a submission that made it into the top 20. “I did it on impulse more than anything. I knew at the time that the (fundraising) campaign was struggling a bit.” The Youth Centre at Moody Park has been selected as one of 20 finalists in the Kraft Celebration Tour, a national initiative launched by Kraft that will see 10 communi-

McFadyen, a member of Century House, wrote a submission stating that funds could be put toward equipment and furnishings in the new youth centre. He noted the youth centre is unique in Canada in that it’s being combined with a seniors’ facility. “We are up against Nelson,” he said. “They are a pretty strong community.” New Westminster’s youth centre will compete against a curling club project in Nelson on July 23, and the winner will be announced on TSN’s SportsCentre on July 26. “This is fantastic news for the new Youth ◗Contest Page 8
