Saying no to traffic Options for United Boulevard extension stir up opposition BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
Sapperton residents have little appetite for any of the United Boulevard extension options put forward by TransLink. A standing-room-only crowd filled the Justice Institute’s theatre for TransLink’s public meeting about the project on Tuesday night. At an October public meeting, TransLink had presented four options for the public’s consideration: Option A (which proposes a T-intersection configuration at Brunette Avenue) and Options B, C or D (which all propose variations of a transportation loop through the Sapperton area near Brunette Avenue). Following TransLink’s first public meeting, New Westminster city council asked TransLink to only consider Option A, a request heeded by TransLink. The city also asked TransLink to provide technical information on traffic impacts, noise and sightlines and to do further public consultation. “There was much more information, including some measurements of current traffic conditions at the Braid and Brunette intersection, and some compelling photos of backed up traffic all around the intersection,” said New Westminster resident Patrick Johnstone in a synopsis ◗United Page 8

New Westminster resident Susan McLeod penned this poem, Annual Guide
to Giving, after reading last year’s Guide to Giving. The Record started the annual Guide to Giving in 1996 to help provide local residents with information about some of the organizations needing their help at Christmas – and throughout the year. Organizations dedicated to helping society on a variety of fronts have told us what kind of help they’d appreciate, and reporter Theresa McManus has compiled this list – which will start in today’s edition and continue next issue. Now, it’s up to you to decide how you’d like to do your good deeds.
Seniors’ Services Society
Demand for assistance from the Seniors’ Services Society has increased dramatically in recent years. Alice Heiman, the society’s support services manager, said about 140 people were using the society’s services four years ago, but more than 500 seniors are now using its programs. Part of the increase is due to cuts in various health and seniors’ programs. “The big thing is to keep seniors in their
