Evaâs legacy lives on through art

Eva Markvoortâs remarkable spirit has helped spark an unprecedented artistic collaboration in Canada â and you wonât have to go far to find it.
Spearheaded by New Westminster residents Angela Au Hemphill and Ian Hemphill, 65 members of the Federation of Canadian Artists created a piece of artwork in honour of Markvoort, a Royal City resident who passed away March 27 after a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis.
Artists contributing to the project include Robert Bateman, Alan Wylie, Mike Svob, Robert Genn and Au Hemphill. âWe ended up with 65 world-class artists,â Hemphill told The Record recently. âThere are some real players on that list. ⌠This is quite a historic event.â
The concept was to have 65 artists contribute a single painting of a red rose, with all of the tiles being combined into one composite painting. Au Hemphill suggested the idea to the Federation of Canadian Artists, which âEva Page 8

es,â said Melanie Gunderson, Meganâs mom. âIt says a lot about the person you are. We are hoping the tipster will help us out once again.â Gunderson said itâs a parentâs responsibility to keep their children safe.
âI have to take blame for what happened because I wasnât able to keep her safe,â she said. âI am hoping that someone will share that with me. Thereâs still a big piece missing that would help us find closure.â
