N. Van man wins $2M on lottery Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
CHRISTMAS came early for one North Vancouver man who recently pocketed a $2million lottery windfall. Gordon Jukes, a 40-year-old maintenance worker, matched six out of six numbers on the Dec. 1 BC/49 draw to win the game’s top prize. He admitted the win didn’t register at first. “I was on my lunch break with a co-worker and decided to check my ticket in the automatic ticket-checking machine,” he said. “I was confused at first, because I thought I had won either $200 or $2,000 dollars. I looked at my co-worker, who appeared shocked, and then I realized it was actually a $2million win!” Jukes said he put the ticket back in his pocket and walked outside. He wasn’t sure what to do after that, so he went back to work. See Windfall page 5

THE North Shore has seen 10 health-related restaurant closures this year, according to figures released last week by Vancouver Coastal Health.
The health authority’s naughty list, updated regularly on its website, attributed the majority of the shutdowns to unsanitary conditions and infestations. Half involved sushi restaurants. Health inspectors closed Yuko Maki restaurant on Lonsdale Avenue twice: once in September for unsanitary conditions and again for two days in October for pests. West Vancouver’s Sakana Sushi on Marine Drive was locked up for 10 days,
VCH says ‘pretty good level of food hygiene on North Shore’
beginning at the end of March, while it dealt with cockroaches and unsanitary conditions, and Finest Yum Yum Chinese Restaurant on Lonsdale closed for nine days in June due to sanitation, sewage contamination and water damage. Closures of a day or less were handed to Doc’s Restaurant and Pub on Bowen Island for rodents and improper dishwashing, Persia Food Products on Marine Drive for rodents, Munchies hotdog stand on Lonsdale for lack of potable and hot water,
Sushi Station on Lonsdale for unsanitary conditions, and Aka Tom-80 Japanese Restaurant, also on Lonsdale, for unsanitary conditions and lack of a permit. A mobile catering vehicle, based in Burnaby, was shut down Nov. 18 for operating on the North Shore without a permit and has yet to reopen. The number of closures is more or less par for the course, said Paul Markey, VCH’s manager of health protection for the North Shore and central coast. “It’s been pretty steady for us,” he said. “We’re extremely lucky; we’ve got a pretty good level of food hygiene on the See All page 5
