North Van man killed in Vancouver Island crash Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
ONE North Vancouver man is dead and another was taken to hospital with serious injuries following a dramatic car crash on Vancouver Island Friday. Darcy Grant, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. He was a passenger in the car that crashed. The name of the 25year-old driver has not been released. The two men were heading south in a Lexus on the Inland Island Highway 19 near Campbell River late Friday night when the driver lost control. According to witnesses, the vehicle plunged into a ditch at the side of the road then flipped into the air, taking out half of a large steel signpost and support beam and slicing several trees in half before landing on its roof. Two passing drivers stopped at the scene before emergency crews arrived. Both the driver and the passenger of the Lexus were trapped inside the vehicle. Campbell River Fire and Rescue had to cut them out of the car. The driver was taken to Campbell River Hospital with serious injuries. He was in stable condition at press time. An RCMP collision analyst inspected the scene of the accident. Preliminary results suggest both speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors in the crash.

Sales between May and July in North Vancouver were also down as much as 30 per cent over the same period last year.
Real estate prices still steady despite July slow-down
The story was similar in West Vancouver, where sales of detached homes were down 15 per cent from June. Sales between May and July were also down about 19 per cent over the same time last year. The number of new listings has also fallen off. Tightening of mortgage qualification rules, rising interest rates and uncertainty about the global economy is making both buyers
and sellers jittery, said Rudy Nielson, president of Landcor, a company which analyzes real estate trends. “A lot of people are just hunkering down,” and watching to see where the economy is heading, he said. That’s a contrast to the earlier part of this year, where sellers rushed to put their homes on the market before the mortgage rules and interest rates changed. Many people also mistakenly believed the HST applied to re-sales of existing homes, said Neilson. Sales numbers in the Metro Vancouver area are now down to
