TWO brothers from Ontario spent a chilly night in the North Shore backwoods after they followed a map without marked trails up the wrong side of a mountain.

HEATHER Johnstone, Edible Garden Project co-ordinator, collects produce from a Lynn Valley garden. Gardners can share their backyard bounty with those less fortunate by dropping off produce at the Harvest Project Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at North Shore Neighbourhood House Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-noon or at Mollie Nye House, daytime Monday-Friday.

The victims were dropped off at the foot of Grouse Mountain Friday. Their plan was to make their way to the summit of Crown Mountain, four kilometres north of the resort, and return the same day. They were using a geological map, which does not show hiking trails, to guide them. Rather than make their way up Grouse via the Grind or another established route, the men walked to the north-west side of the SkyRide parking lot and ducked through the fence into the Capilano watershed, an area that’s off-limits to hikers. They spent the day scrambling through the forest, finding their way into a creek See Rescuers page 3

Cyclists talk down would-be jumper James Weldon

NORTH Vancouver RCMP are hailing the quick actions of a pair of cyclists they say saved the life of a man on the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing. Frank Robson and Kevin Hull, longtime friends from Richmond, were riding north across the bridge just before 10 a.m. Tuesday when they came across a distraught man standing on the outside of the railing. Realizing the man was threatening to jump, the pair stopped to see if they could help. They approached the

man, engaging him in conversation before grabbing hold of him and helping him back over the railing. Police arrived moments later and took the man into custody under the Mental Health Act. The officers transported the 56-yearold to hospital for assessment. Had it not been for Robson and Hull’s intervention, the man might have lost his life, said Cpl. Peter DeVries, a spokesman for the North Vancouver detachment. “I thought that what these two guys did was pretty heroic,” said DeVries. “Anytime someone from the public . . . extends

themselves to save someone’s life I think is noteworthy.” After giving their report to police, the men went on their way. The issue of bridge jumping rose in profile in 2008 when a distraught woman on Ironworkers brought Canada Day traffic to a standstill for six hours. Since then, the province has installed crisis phones on the Lions Gate Bridge, and the B.C. Coroners Service has recommended that suicide barriers be added to both Burrard Inlet crossings. The province hired a consultant last year to review that proposal and others, but has not yet announced the findings. Anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts can contact the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of B.C. at 1-800-8723311 or online at crisiscentre.bc.ca.
