Go Bus gets lastminute reprieve Tessa Holloway

THE North Shore Seniors Go Bus is back on the road thanks to a last-minute donation. Pacific Arbour Retirement Communities, which owns the Summerhill retirement residence in North Vancouver and is seeking approval for new projects in West Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, stepped up with $10,000 to keep the service rolling until October. “It gives us some breathing space to do some more longterm funding, and I think that the seniors are very happy about that,” said Margaret Coates, a spokeswoman for Silver Harbour Seniors Centre, which manages the service. The centre is in talks with other organizations and hopes to find more permanent funding in the fall. See Service page 3

MLAs targeted for recall vote Benjamin Alldritt

ORGANIZERS of the Fight HST campaign on the North Shore say they’ll be gunning for North Vancouver’s two Liberal MLAs first when their group tries to unseat the entire Liberal caucus later this year. “There seem to be a lot more people concerned with the representation coming out of those two communities,” said Eddie Petrossian. “We exceeded the 15 per cent target by greater numbers in those ridings than we did in the West Vancouver ridings, so they would be our focus at this point.”

Anti-HST campaigners plan to force North Van reps from office

The Fight HST campaign won its first victory on Wednesday when Elections BC confirmed that 10 per cent of registered voters had signed their anti-HST petition in all of the province’s 85 ridings. However, chief electoral officer Craig James told campaign leader Bill Vander Zalm he would not forward the successful petition to the legislature for consideration until a court challenge by business groups is settled, which will likely happen next week. “All the canvassers and volunteers were completely enthused,” Petrossian said. “Their hard work had paid off, but as much as we

were thrilled with the petition being accepted, the ‘but’ portion of the chief electoral officer’s answer was not too pleasing.” At a press conference Wednesday, Vander Zalm angrily denounced James’ decision and vowed to launch a recall initiative against every Liberal MLA. To succeed and trigger a byelection, campaigners will need to sign up 40 per cent of registered voters in the riding. Petrossian said the staggered province-wide effort will likely start in the north. “We want to make sure the first few recalls are successful, so the North Shore may not be on the go immediately, but we will see. There are a lot of ridings out in the north, for example, that collected signatures way over the 40, 50, 60 per cent level, so I imagine the
