NORTH Vancouver RCMP have put out a Canada-wide plea for information to help them track down a man who set his common-law wife on fire and then kept her from hospital for two weeks to hide his crime. Jeffrey Paul Emery, 53, has been on the run for five years, since he skipped his trial and was convicted of aggravated assault in absentia. Emery was at home with his thenspouse in the 200-block of Riverside Drive on April 13, 2004 when they got into a fight. He accused her of having hidden his medication, and when she didn’t produce it, he doused her in hairspray and set her on fire. Emery smothered the flames when they had only burnt her legs, and asked the victim again for the medication. She said she didn’t know where it was, so he set her on fire a second time. The results were devastating. “She erupted in a fireball, causing thirddegree burns to her arms, legs, torso, . . . thighs,” said North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. NORTH Vancouver’s Conservative MP Andrew Saxton says the federal government’s decision to make the long-form census voluntary rather than mandatory will actually make the results more accurate. He made the remarks on the same day the head of Statistics Canada resigned in protest over the move.

“We’re not talking about getting rid of the long-form census,” said Saxton. “What we’re talking about is changing it from mandatory to voluntary. Experience has shown that when someone is made to fill out a form they often don’t take it seriously because they have to fill it out.” The short-form census, which will remain mandatory, asks only
