Humble hero saves 2 from West Van fire Acetone-fuelled salon fire traps two behind wall of flame and smoke James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
TWO people were lucky to escape alive from a West Vancouver beauty salon Monday when a tub of nail polish remover caught fire, rapidly triggering a larger blaze that blocked the only exit.
Firefighters say the two were saved by the quick actions of a passerby. The accident happened at about 2 p.m. when a worker at the salon in the 200-block of 17th Street opened a one-gallon tub of acetone and started pouring it into smaller containers. According to investigators, a nearby scented candle ignited the vapours and set the large container on fire, but because the chemical burns with a nearly invisible flame, the worker didn’t notice what had happened until the heat grew so intense she could feel it. The container melted abruptly, spilling the burning chemical across the countertop and floor, quickly igniting wooden doors, the paint on the walls and other flammables. Most of the half-dozen occupants immediately escaped the building, See Two page 5
Province gives LGH 2 new emergency doctors
DOCTORS at Lions Gate Hospital’s emergency room are still waiting to see if a recent $12-million funding boost from the province is the good news it appears to be.
“We don’t have a final word,” said Dr. Mike O’Neil, a 20-year veteran of emergency medicine. “We thought it was going to be very good news. We’re not certain at this time.” On Wednesday, the provincial Ministry of Health and the B.C. Medical Association announced a deal that will see the province provide more funding to pay for contracted emergency room physicians at 19 hospitals in British Columbia. The deal would see the number of full-time positions rise at Lions Gate Hospital’s ER to 16.29 from a current 14. O’Neil said at first glance the news looks promising. But he cautioned doctors are waiting to make sure other funding for the emergency department isn’t reduced at the same time. — Jane Seyd
