Philanthropist gives Artists for Kids’ new gallery $2M Niamh Scallan

nscallan@nsnews.com

THE Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation for Youth Artists will receive a generous $2-million gift at the groundbreaking ceremony for the North Vancouver school district’s new education service centre and Artists for Kids gallery today. The Audain Foundation is donating funds to the Smith Foundation to support the gallery’s construction, scheduled for completion in spring 2012. The gallery’s new home at 21st Street and Lonsdale Avenue will allow Artists for Kids to maintain its premier collection of Canadian art — worth more than $2 million — and to improve its arts education programs. The Audain Foundation is known province-wide for supporting artistic and cultural projects since 1997. Run by Michael Audain, CEO of Vancouver housing development company Polygon Homes Ltd., the foundation has donated more than $17 million to public art galleries to support construction and art projects. “I have been a fan of Gordon Smith’s beautiful art work for many years, but most especially his dedication to Artists for Kids,” Audain said in a press release. “Thus we are privileged to help in the construction See Gift page 3

Seniors highrise plan divides hearing Niamh Scallan

A contentious seniors highrise proposal had District of North Vancouver residents split evenly down the middle at a public hearing Tuesday night. More than 150 North Vancouver residents crowded a tension-filled council chamber to comment on a plan that could see an 11-storey, 146-unit seniors rental accommodation built

in the 3600-block of Mount Seymour Parkway. Pacific Arbour Retirement Communities’ Peter Gaskill briefly presented details of the proposal to a largely divided audience. He offered nine reasons why the building would “serve the entire community.” Gaskill said the development would help churches and groups retain their members, keep families together and provide cost-saving measures for the

Gaskill noted the need for council’s support to rezone land See Parkway page 3
