Car thieves land in creek after chase by Jeremy Shepherd editorial@mrtimes.com
Two alleged car thieves who fled from police in a Ford pickup truck, tore through a yard, and ended up by a creek on Docksteader Loop were arrested on Friday night, according police. Scott Collins had a front-row seat to the action and said he could feel the truck, which he said had a washer, dryer and barbecue in it, roaring past his house. “The house was vibrating and shaking,” he said. The two men fled from officers earlier in the evening, nearly hitting a police officer who was trying to stop the truck with a spike belt, according to Ridge Meadows RCMP. The truck, which had been stolen from Nakusp, was being chased by police when it headed down the dead-end street, took a turn through Collins’ yard and crashed through a hitching post before ending up in a creek about 20 feet below. “The truck plowed into the blackberries,” Collins said. He said the dense brush mitigated the damage to the truck. After crashing, the suspects fled and police swarmed the block with officers, Integrated Police Dog Services and a police helicopter that cast its searchlight on the area. “It was kind of like something
out of a movie... watching the floodlights on your back porch,” Collins said. Collins said one man was arrested near the side of his house and police nabbed the other man near 232 Street. Collins said he was impressed by the restraint of the police given the adrenaline they must have been feeling. “My wife was quite surprised how gentle they were,” he said, adding that a police dog might have chewed one of the men a little. “I give him credit, he was a good driver,” he said. The truck managed to miss a trailer equipped with propane, two trucks, a Lexus and a Durango, according to Collins. “The most damage was probably to the lawn when the tow truck couldn’t get [the truck] out,” he said. At first glance, the fleeing pickup truck seemed to have vanished, according to Collins. “The police officer who was behind said it was like the Twilight Zone because the truck just disappeared [when it went around the bend].” The two suspects, 36 and 40, were kept in police custody by a justice for a first court appearance yesterday. The truck was also seized.
Greybrook parents, staff hope to settle by Samantha Shirley Urano editorial@mrtimes.com
It wasn’t all foot (or paw) races at Saturday’s Doggie Dash in Pitt Meadows’ Osprey Village. Dana Gallagher of Kinetic Dog Training was on hand perform a freestyle disc routine with her English shepherd, Zephyr. Gallagher would throw or wave various plastic discs around and Zephyr would respond by leaping and twisting in the air, to the delight of the crowd. Mitch Thompson/TIMES
Parents and teachers at Greybrook Academy, the private school that closed in November 2009, will be gathering Dec. 9 for a settlement conference. Many teachers are seeking the three months severance pay they did not receive, and parents are seeking tuition fees they paid. Karen Kelln, whose daughter attended the beginning of her Grade 7 year at Greybrook Academy, paid $10,520, the full tuition amount for the 2009-10 school year. Even though her daughter only attended 12 weeks of the school year, they have not been
reimbursed for the other 33 weeks she missed because of the school’s closure. At $233.78 per week, Kelln is requesting $7,714.74. In a Provincial Court of B.C. document, the school’s founder and owner, Nigel Turner, said there were insufficient funds to pay Kelln’s claim. “It’s very unsettling,” Kelln said. She said her daughter was affected by having to switch schools yet again.“We actually moved from Toronto, so she moved across Canada, moved into the private school and then Dec. 1 she had to move again to a public school because the school closed its doors,” Kelln explained.
