Pitt Meadows mother is outraged that her 17-year-old son was in police custody for more than 10 hours with a jaw broken in two places without receiving medical treatment for his injuries. Jennifer, who can’t be identified by her last name because her son is a young offender, has filed a formal complaint with the B.C. Ambulance Service and the RCMP about the incident. The TIMES is using Kevin as a pseudonym for the 17-year-old, who can’t be named. Kevin was taken to police cells at around 4 a.m. on June 27 and
charged with four counts of assault with a weapon for allegedly using mace on a group of four people. He said that while he was in the police car a paramedic looked at him through the window of the police car. He was cleared and taken to the cells at the local detachment. Kevin said he began yelling and banging on his cell, spitting blood and repeatedly demanding an ambulance. At around 8 a.m. a paramedic checked Kevin out in the cells. Kevin said the paramedic told police that he only had a cut lip. After the paramedic left, Kevin continued to demand medical attention.

Ridge Meadows RCMP Inspector Derren Lench said that at the time of his arrest Kevin complained there was blood coming from his mouth. However, Lench said Kevin was so “intoxicated and belligerent in the back of the police car we couldn’t let him out of there for the ambulance attendants to actually treat him in person. They had to do a look through from outside the vehicle,” said Lench. He said when paramedics came to check him out in the cells “his main complaint” was a cut lip and the paramedics determined he was “fit to remain (in cells) and didn’t have to go to the hospital.” See JAW, Page 3
