IHIT investigates shooting of Ridge man A
man shot in what police believe was a targeted hit died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the shooting. The man was discovered lying on the road in the 23200 block of 124 Avenue in Maple Ridge after reports of a shooting early Monday morning. The victim has been identified as 36year-old Kenneth Corey Heathorn of Maple Ridge. Heathorn is well known to the Ridge Meadows RCMP for his involvement in criminal activity, specifically the street-level drug trade and other crimes associated with the street-level drug trade. Heathorn survived being shot in the
abdomen nearly two years ago. On Monday at about 7:45 a.m. Ridge Meadows RCMP received a report through 9-1-1 about a shooting that had just occurred in the 23200 block of 124th Avenue. Police immediately went to the area and discovered the victim lying on the roadway suffering from apparent gunshot-related injuries. British Columbia Ambulance Service went the scene and proceeded to provide medical assistance to Heathorn. Heathorn was eventually airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Investigators have learned that Heathorn
was riding a bicycle in the neighbourhood just prior to the shooting. The bicycle was discovered at the scene near the victim. “Based on the evidence at the scene and who the victim is, investigators are of the belief that this shooting was specifically targeted at Heathorn,” says Cpl. Dale Carr of IHIT. Carr added, “investigators are looking into the theory that this incident is linked to drugs, gangs or organized crime.” Police have learned that a vehicle was seen possibly fleeing the area moments after the shots rang out. Investigators are attempting to gather accurate descriptive information about the vehicle prior to releasing to the
community. They will be in the neighbourhood on Wednesday and Thursday speaking to neighbours to identify if they have any information that will advance the investigation. “We are attempting to identify Heathorn’s friends and associates. Often times they can offer information that is valuable to the investigation,” Carr said. Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT TIP Line at 1-877-551-IHIT. If you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Your anonymity is guaranteed.
