elvin Anderson laid the wreath honouring veterans of the Korean War at Langley City’s cenotaph Thursday morning. By his side was his granddaughter, Madison Reid. Anderson, who served in Korea in 1952 and ’53 with Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry, has always encouraged his family to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies. “They’re going to lay wreaths when I’m gone,” Anderson said. Too many veterans from the Second World War and Korea are dying of old age, Anderson said. “I’ve been to six funerals in the last month alone,” he said, all of them comrades from his days in the military. Anderson was cheered to see so many children, with families and with groups like the Scouts, Guides, and Cadets, at this year’s ceremonies. Families and individuals packed the sidewalks and surrounded cenotaphs in Langley City, Aldergrove, and Fort Langley Thursday morning. Hundreds of people lined Fraser Highway in Aldergrove as the parade wound its way to the Aldergrove Legion hall. MLA Rich Coleman, Langley Township Mayor Rick Green, and other local dignitaries laid wreaths. At Fort Langley, MP Mark Warawa laid a wreath, and soloist Cole Armour sang Amazing Grace, as people lined up four rows deep around the cenotaph on Glover Road. Another sizeable crowd surrounded Langley City’s relocated cenotaph on 56th Avenue, and members of the public clapped as veterans marched past. City Mayor Peter Fassbender and MLA Mary Polak represented local governments. The Fraser Blues flying team passed over each of the three cenotaphs at close to 11 a.m.

Thousands paid their respects at the cenotaph at Aldergrove Legion (top) on Remembrance Day. Meanwhile, Supt. Derek Cooke (above) saluted during Fort Langley’s Rememberance Day ceremony at the War Memorial in the Fort cemetery Thursday morning. And veterans and members of the public left their poppies on wreaths at the Langley City cenotaph, following the morning services in front of the new Legion hall.
