Visit the old haunt It’s baaaack – get ready to be scared at the Pate family’s charitable haunted house. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@langleyadvance.com

After a one-year hiatus, a graveyard has sprung up in the front yard of Jim Pate’s home on the Langley/ Surrey border. The house, at 19128 58th Ave, off of 192nd Street, has been “haunted” every Halloween for several years, now, but last year, the ghosts and ghouls took a vacation. Starting tonight (Friday) and running until Halloween (Sunday), things that go “bump in the night” have once again taken up residence at the house in an effort to raise support and funds for the BC Childhood Cancer Parents Association. The BCCCPA is a non-profit society, the mission of which is to help families who have children with cancer and who are struggling financially, by providing them with aid through the Family Financial Aid Program. Visit: www.bcccpa.org. Pate and his son Matt have been decorating their home for Halloween for the better part of 20 years, and

this year, went all out, with help from family friend Jameson Smith. “This is right up my alley,” Jim Pate said. “Halloween is my favourite season.” Pate has taken work home with him– literally. A veteran prop master who has worked on a number of TV productions including the X-Files and most recently, Eureka, Pate has helped set up quite an elaborate spook house. “Jim’s work schedule is incredibly hectic, being a prop master in the television industry, so the building of the haunted house has fallen largely onto Matt and myself now,” Smith said. “Jim certainly puts in his time wherever he can to help us out and brings a ton of great ideas to the table every year, and always works with us on the weekends when he’s off.” Actors will be strategically positioned to catch people by surprise. There is also a “friendly tour” with flashlights for people who don’t enjoy the thrill of “creatures” jumping from the shadows at them. The home will be open to the public tonight (Friday), Saturday, and Sunday from 6-9 p.m. each day. Donations to the BCCPA are not necessary but certainly welcome. • More online at www.langleyadvance.com

Two teenagers face criminal charges after a street race and crash that left one of them in the hospital with serious internal injuries. The crash took place in the 26200 block of 88th Avenue in Glen Valley at about 5:30 p.m., said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. A 1993 Acura Integra driven by an 18-year-old man was racing a 1990 Honda Accord, which had a 17-year-old young woman from Chilliwack at the wheel. The cars were headed east, with the Acura driving in the oncoming lane. The cars had been weaving in and out of traffic on what is usually a quiet, rural road. The Acura left the road and slammed into a tree on the north side of the street, Marks said. Township firefighters had to extract the victim from his car, and he was taken to hospital by Air Ambulance. He was reportedly in serious but stable condition. Police will likely recommend charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while street racing against both drivers, Marks said. Both cars, including the one that crashed, have also been seized by the RCMP. Police shut down 88th Avenue for several hours while the injured young man was taken away. The crash scene was investigated by members of the Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) which looks into major crashes around the Lower Mainland. Marks said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash. This is not the first time Langley has seen problems with street racing. Earlier in the decade, a stretch of Allard Crescent became popular with street racers, largely because it was almost deserted after dark. Police stepped up enforcement, and the Township added rumble strips to the road near 208th Street, to discourage reckless drivers. Marks could not say if the long, straight 88th Avenue stretch is a frequent draw for Lower Mainland street racers. Over the past several years, new laws have been created to specifically target street racers, with tougher penalties. Anyone who saw the race or crash can call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Fight injures Mountie A police officer scuffled with a drunk teenager in the middle of Fraser Highway Tuesday night. by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

An RCMP officer trying to help a passed-out teenager in Aldergrove was attacked by a young man Tuesday night. The Mountie was one of several who were called to the area of the Aldergrove 7-11 on Fraser Highway at about 9:30 p.m., said Cpl. Holly Marks. A group of drunk young people had gathered in the store’s parking lot, Marks said. The officer told them to move along, or they could be arrested for causing a disturbance. As the crowd broke up, the officer spotted a girl lying in the road on Fraser Highway.
